Title: custom build computer for pictures and media?
Post by: KFhunter on November 05, 2015, 09:55:30 AM
I'm getting ready to build a computer designed for picture and media storage and editing.

Anyone done so I'd like to see some specs?

I know I want m.2 for the OS for nearly instant on, and stacked HDD's in a raid 1   (I've lost picts before and still hear about it all the time)

I'll post some specs from newegg here later,  I lost my shopping cart  :'(

If you use an online backup service like Carbonite or Backblaze you don't need to worry about setting up a RAID configuration and spending double for storage.

I see. You have slow internet. That's too bad. I really like using online backup services for a variety of reasons, including the ability to access my files from just about anywhere at any time.

It's usually not that bad, it was out for a while and recently came back up.

Need to phone them and let them know I'm paying for 8mbps and only getting a fraction of that.

Editing is one thing.  Storage is another.  If your current editing needs are met, consider a NAS.  There are some very nice large ones that are raid.  Plop it in a wired gigabit network, and you'd have a pretty decent storage option.

Here's an example.

computer is long past due for an upgrade, I've got room for a full tower no problem

That looks pretty interesting, I like that it has RAID 1 to mirror files plus you can access your files from anywhere over the internet.

I'd still consider a NAS in addition to the RAID in a new desktop.  It's cheap insurance.

With the RAID in the desktop, I would have a separate drive for the OS and use the RAID array just for storage.  Once you get the desktop set up, you can image the OS drive and store it on the RAID array for easy OS drive failure restoration.

The only files I have lost since about 1994 have been about 6 months of emails due to a laptop drive failure.

I don't have any specific hardware recommendations, as I am still running a seven year old build and haven't looked into hardware specs in ages.

Note that you could do that with almost any NAS, a dynamic DNS service, and some software, and/or setting up your network with a VPN.

The types of services such as "Buffalo's free WebAccess" are typically preferred by the generic consumer because they are easier to set up.  They typically rely on some sort of registration with the mother ship (Buffalo's Servers) to enable easy anywhere connection to the NAS.

What sort of storage capacity are you seeking?

not sure, I was hoping to get some idea from the picture people here.  Boneaddict?

4 2TB HDD's raid 1 would be plenty I think  (2tb total storage), but I was thinking about storing all my kids' cartoons and movies on computer instead of a mess of DVD's on a bookshelf.

NAS might be good for the cartoon's and movies

With only 2TB and RAID 1 (mirroring), just buy 3 HDDs, with one as a backup.

The NAS is a good idea for a media storage device as it (at least the one I linked) has support for DLNA and streaming media.  I'd like to do the same with all the DVDs.

Gotcha on the M.2 (SSD) for OS; slipped by me the first time. Like I said. I have been out of the loop on specs for quite a while.

You know?  The Nazis had soft cap throttles on their internet!

That's going to be a big issue if you chose an online backup and are transferring at on of files for last computer. If you want your backup encrypted, you could be looking at WEEKS to do your initial upload. Many backup services will mail you an external drive for your first backup, and you do your subsequent backups online. Personally, I don't want all my files out there in a 'cloud' somewhere. Neither is having a separate drive plugged in at the same time your computer is at the same time. A good lightning strike could take out both simultaneously. Then there's fire/theft. My backup method is an external hard drive that I mostly keep at work, locked up.

Your most important photo backup is a hard copy. PERIOD. "If its not a printed product, its not a photo" -Jerry Gihonis. I think Costco is the best consumer level printing service as the colors and contrast  tend to match my computer well AND they print on archival quality paper that won't yellow over time. There are other great services out there for pros such as White House but Costco is about as good IMHO.

Vint Cerf, the internet pioneer, said it was time to start preserving the vast quantities of digital data which are produced before they are lost forever.

Warning that the 21st century could become a second "Dark Ages" because so much data is now kept in digital format, he said that future generations would struggle to understand our society because technology is advancing so quickly that old files will be inaccessible.
Speaking at a conference in San Jose, California, Mr Cerf likened the problem to the Dark Ages, the period in Britain between the 5th and 8th centuries where little is known, following the collapse of the Roman Empire

Use use Costco a lot,  got some nice canvas printed hanging on the wall

We like the canvas so much it's one reason I got a bigger camera, my old one ran out of pixels pretty fast printing large pictures.  Now I can print a huge one.

Consider a hybrid hard drive system: say a 512GB solid state drive and a 2TB cheaper, spinning disk drive. The hybrid drive would store all your applications and operating system, but namely the photo editing application. In my case that's Lightroom. Since LR doesn't actually made destructive, pixel level edits on your photos, it doesn't need to actually write to them as you're spending hours and hours editing and cataloging.

Other things:

I called my ISP and did a little whining, they lifted the soft cap throttle and now I'm seeing the best speeds I've ever seen

+1 on the NAS. I've got a synology NAS with 2 - 2tb swipped drives. I've had power outgages and just plain old pulling the plug. Haven't lost a single file yet. Even when you delete files on the NAS, they are not really gone. It keeps them around. You really have to work hard to actually remove them.

Moving files to and from the cloud is going to take time. -1 on the cloud solution.

Max out your ram and make sure it's a 64 bit cpu. Otherwise the ram is wasted. Most systems max out at 16gb.

Good luck.

USB 3.0 is nice to have for getting pictures off of memory cards.

Man you ain't lying about that. I have a USB 3.0 and with a UDMA 7-enabled (ultra direct mode access) card its a firehose of dataflow! :rockin:

Have you looked into making your old computer into a nas?

This should get you started.
