The Story Behind "Lunker Art by Nate"
My nine year old son eats, sleeps and dreams all day about fishing. Recently he took up researching the fish he dreams of catching and began drawing them freehand. Soon, his piles of artwork were filling the house. I said, "Wow, you're getting to be quite the artist! Can I buy one of your originals?"
He laughed and said, "Sure..I'll give 50% to my favorite charities." So I did...just to encourage him. And he decided that he wanted to do more.
So, I began teaching him how to scan his artwork and save to the computer. Next we made up a watermark for him and titled it "Lunker Art" (a "lunker" is the name given to a really big fish). Then we began using an online printing company to help us make the cards.
And now he's selling his artwork on note cards, calendars, and note paper to use to buy fishing gear for himself and while giving 50% to charity. Even more, I'm using this as a way to help him develop his talent for drawing and his passion for fishing. Each time he draws a new fish, he researches and studies the differences in fish, their habitat and their unique characteristics. (I suspect he may become a marine biologist one day...)
Nate's Favorite Charities Include:
- Children of the Nations International (COTNI) www.cotni.org
- CAST for Kids: http://www.castforkids.org/

Nice work Nate!!!!!!!!
Your drawing rocks!!
Nate says, "Thanks! I'm learning. Someone donated a fancy set of coloring pencils to me today, so my colors will be better."

Got my cards in the mail the other day. They are really cool. Everybody can use some cards to have handy for thank-you's, birthdays, etc. This is a great way to support some charities, and support a kid with some serious initiative. If you do any entry level hiring these days, you know that kids like Nate don't grow on trees. I hope he sells enough to fill his tackle box!

Thanks, Angry Perch! Nate's thrilled that you like them.
When I came home from work today, Nate was drawing another sturgeon. He's trying to perfect his work. He's hopeful that one day I'll get him out for a sturgeon fishing trip. (He's a bit young yet, but one day.)

Bump for Hunt-WA Gift Exchange

Quick Update:
Nate sent a card to CAST for Kids this week with some of the cash he earned from sales. After speaking with the PNW CAST for Kids representative, Jessica, the organization has requested the opportunity to share about Nate with their partners.
Also, today, Nate met with a journalist from Children of the Nations (cotni.org) and answered questions about his artwork, his passion, and more. Afterwards, he delivered a gift of cash to the finance department with an order form from COTN's gift catalog - where he ordered some items for children living in poverty.
If you'd like to continue to help support Nate, please re-order or order some cards for the first time.
From a daddy who's super proud of his kid. Thanks to all the members on here who've helped me teach Nate great life lessons.

Awesome H2OHunter.
Nate's really getting very serious about this artwork stuff. He's been self-teaching himself and I'm just blown away with his skill. Hope you'll get a chance to see his waterfowl cards soon. He's been learning how to draw ducks, geese, pheasants, owls, birds of prey, and other interesting birds. (Probably because his brother has been getting a chance to go duck hunting as of late).

Lunker Art is still selling cards. If you would like to support Nate (now 10 years old), he'd love to sell you some of his cards. We're selling off our current stock.

Weird.... A kid who has a talent, a kid who has drive, a kid who is willing to work hard, a kid who is willing to do research, an entrepreneur. Good job dad for encouraging this young man. Good job Nate for learning a lesson many adults have not yet figured out.

Haha... thanks Cory TDF.
Nate was just commissioned by a local artisan here in Kitsap county. She's asked him to draw some artwork (based on her pottery with designs of fish on them). She loved his versions of his work and is now asking to purchase a large supply of his cards for her store. He's excited, because he'd like to use the money to go fishing for Springers in April/May - now just to find a guide who does well with children.

Could be on to something there. That would be a really cool project for him. I could see him illustrating children's books or something. I promise that if I saw pictures like that on the cover of a book I would buy it for my girls. Beats the crap out of all the CG garbage that is forced down kids throats these days.
I bet you could get story line made up pretty easy. His name with Author/Illustrator behind it would sure be a great accomplishment. I bet Tri State Steelheaders, Trout Unlimited, North American Fishing Club, or some other organization would be willing to help.
-
We have put our cards to good use...I get lots of praise for the young man and many questions as to why my cards show bears and flamingos in the woods.

All current stock is gone.
An updated ad will be placed soon with new additions from Lunker Art.
Also, just an update for all those who've supported Nate...
First - Thanks for supporting his artwork, his entrepreneurship, his charities, and his passion for fishing.
Second - A local business in the Kitsap county region has commissioned Nate to design cards for their business. He's drawing more fish cards (based on pottery that is made in Poland and sold here in the USA - check it out here potteryavenue.com (http://potteryavenue.com)). What an amazing opportunity.

Third - Nate will be taking art lessons this summer to strengthen this new skill. You can expect to see more designs this fall.
Fourth - Nate had the unique opportunity to go to Belize this month with our family. His grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and took us on a trip. While in Belize, Nate had the opportunity of a lifetime to go deep sea fishing. Yes, it was a success... I'll share that post soon with pics. (suspense)

For those of you interested in Nate's recent trip to Belize... Check out this story I posted today:

Hey All
Lunker Art by Nate is going to be posting a new classified in the next week or so with a new set of cards that Nate has been working on over the summer. In addition, he's been honing his skills in art and we've found a new printing company to provide us with better quality cards with less gloss. I think you'll like his new card options.
Nate's been busy this spring and summer fishing with his big brother. The two of them have been successfully hauling out fish from WA state lakes and on a recent trip to Maine (visiting their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins) found success fishing backwoods bogs and streams.
Also, he had the opportunity to meet the Northwest representative of C.A.S.T. for Kids, Jessica Kelly, and presented her with one of his cards. (Nate donated part of his proceeds to C.A.S.T. this past year). It's been a busy summer.
Thanks for all who've supported him. More to come soon.
