I hunted wynoochee valley road years ago for deer and decided to check it out yesterday for a place to take my daughter for elk.. There were very few hunters and a ton of "red dot" gates. Is there land/road access in there for elk? We are going back out next weekend. I usually hunt Lewis River unit off of FS 25, but it just too far for a weekend trip. It's her first time out with her rifle, trying to find somewhere to get her in the woods and comfortable walking/carrying her gun.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Not looking for honey holes or secrets, just trying to grow a 13yr olds interest in hunting.

There is an elk area in 651, just passed schaefer state park on the left if you look at the go hunt map you can find it.

There is are a few road closures in 648 if I remember correct. GD land around the nooch has been closed since the 70s. Further west there is closures that have been in place for 20-30 years. There is more gates now and many of the landowners do not open because of public abuse. GD has opened a few.

go up nooch river road to 7400 and at the bottom is a bridge and gate. Walk in or bike a couple miles to some great fields down by the river and the elk are there. You can also intercept them coming off the valley floor as they do cross over the road to the eastside timber and clear cuts but not that many on the valley floor.

Is this public land? I have been searching go-hunt for public land other than national forest, but have found very little. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Thanks in advance.

Green diamond opened several access areas off the west boundary road and Kelly road. Some stuff behind mill 5 is also feel free to hunt. (North of Shelton matlock road) unit 636. Satsop (651) south of Shelton Matlock road is pay to play green diamond so be aware of gate signage. I heard Kelly road was a zoo with people because it is about the only open land to hunt with no permit needed. Any of the timber companies websites have open areas listed with maps. Research before you go.

Green Diamond has the 7400 line gates locked this year. You can enter through 7300 line gates and go south towards the 7400 line...there is a gate blocking entrance at the 7400/7300 Junction aswell. About 3 miles? From the bridge crossing the river.
You would be stuck walking or riding a very long way to get into the first set of fields. Which happens to be the hardest hunted set of fields on the west side of the river.
IF and only IF the river was low. You could find a place to cross and hunt the higher sets of fields. But sadly right now, and probably through the end of elk season the river will be fairly high. And without actually knowing the river where to cross, and aswell as the dam flow and how it is affected per rainfall. Crossing would be foolish.

I appreciate all the info, thanks everyone!! I think we might just make the long drive Saturday morning to Lewis river and hunt back side of alder lake Sunday. Thanks again

Go up wishkah valley to the g-line and get into the north half of Donovan corkery. You can get to the west side fields there. No doubt a few other folks will be there too.

I've hunted those fields a few times for late archery elk. Always saw a ton of sign, but never any elk. I'd always start my trek well before light across that bridge and be in the fields before sun up.. There would always be the Mt bike guys coming in juuuuust before first light, but I never saw anything but tracks and pooh down there. Goodluck out there and be safe!

thanks guys!!

I'm looking for area to hunt too. Was up at Winston Creek and seen nothing. How do you get to Wishkah Valley?

Head west from Olympia on hwy 8 to montesano then north up wynoochee valley road for ten miles then turn left. After a few miles you come to another crossroad, turn right that is wishkah valley road. Keep going till road turns to gravel and look for g-line road passed the hatcherie.
Here is a map.
