Title: Elk Hunting GMU 560 Lewis River Help
Post by: elkhunter9999 on November 10, 2015, 10:53:40 AM
Hello,

I am new to Washington this year and I'm going to hunt this coming weekend in GMU 560 Lewis River for elk and modern firearm. I definitely don't mind hiking and i'm not into the areas where i'm going to be dodging bullets. It seems from reading these forums that the areas with the most people have the most elk.  I choose this unit because it seems to have the best reviews and a large number of harvests per year. I know you probably don't want to give me your secret spots,  but if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I'm from Oregon and if you were interested I could trade Hunting and Fishing spots to go in Oregon. Just looking for a good area where I can see some elk and put some miles on my boots. Looking at some maps and reading some forums, it seems west of Mount Adams is a decent area with less hunters as compared to Mount Saint Helens, but I could be completely wrong. I'm not looking for your honey hole just some knowledge of the area of where would be a good place to start since I haven't done any scouting, since I just moved here not that long ago. If you want send me a pm and we can chat. I've been salmon/steelhead fishing Oregon for a long time so I know lots of spots as well as lots of spots to kill some big game.

Thanks for your help!

I dont know the area that well but there are a ton of hunters west of adams. Was in there for archery this year and no matter where we went there were people. We hiked into the wilderness and backpacked for a fews and there were people there. Tried areas west of the wilderness and there were more people. Tons of pressure in that unit but there are elk there.

Pour over some maps and hunt the DNR land. The NF land hasn't been cut in decades and is all choked up with a lot fewer elk and deer. Good luck. Welcome to the forum.
