Title: Elk still rutting?
Post by: Bigbuckoholic on November 14, 2015, 03:25:21 PM
I've been hunting a certain spot since September for elk as much as possible (multi season tag) with very little rut activity in the earlier seasons.. Well today I was doing my routine when I noticed a deer standing in my path. I stopped and watched her for a bit and continued on. Right when I got to where the Doe was I heard a cow chirp. Figuring it was another hunter that just got a call and wanted to go elk hunt for the first time I didn't move and just listened for a while. Before I knew it there was all kinds of cows talking back and forth. I worked my way into the thick timber and then I heard a bull chuckle. Followed quickly by another bull. Then They started sparring, they were so close I could feel it in my chest. Two of the big Bulls I've been after since September. But there was so many cows with them and little Bulls all over the place I was never able to get a shot before a cow almost ran right over me. Has anyone ever experienced this type of rutty behavior this late in the year? I couldn't believe it.

I saw a bull up above my house week ago all by him self. Watched him for an hour and he didn't move. To access the area you would need to pass over private land and I'm also pretty sure the land he was on is private also. Sadly a few days later I heard he got shot the same day I was watching him. Can't stand people that don't follow the rules. Here's the bull I was watching

Handsome look'n guy. Maybe it was the land owner that popped him. I hate when that happens. :bash:

I know who shot him. And he was reported and the game warden dealt with him. But anyhow yea I don't think they are rutting very hard any longer.

Is the clear cut he was in timber company land ?
Or was it a private land clear cut ?

If it was timberland, then I'm curious why this individual should have is AZZ hung ? I own a couple large chunks of land and they both border timber company land and it takes guys a good while to hike around, but it's legal, as I don't own All the woods like some people think they do !

Had a friend cow call a 6 point in on his rifle Goose Prairie Tag this year and I've had bulls bugling/sparring in November in the Soixson years ago.

Most likely has nothing to do with the rut.  Elk talk all year.  Ever go to a feeding station in January? The elk are still talking just not saying the same stuff.

I've heard cows talking year round. I guess it was just the amount of talking from all of them and the aggressive sparring that caught me off guard. Was a great morning and an awesome experience regardless.

We hunt some highly pressured elk. They were popping off 3 days deep into the season even after several bulls bit the dust.....it is abnormal for my area.

couldn't even sleep in my wall tent last week elk chirping all night and a nice sounding bull bugling along with them, jumped one in the morning right out of camp and filled my cow tag an hour later.
