Got any ideas? I'd love to watch a DVD series with him or a book that could teach us some of the keys. Thoughts, ideas?

Youtube can be very informative as well. Look for old episodes of Anglers West TV. They have a bunch of stuff on their usually fishing with a guide that gives some insight into what he's doing. Watching fish coming in the boat as they are netting them is a good place to pause the video if they don't cover how they are setting up that day because you can usually see what they are using.
If you are close to fishing / outdoors store get on their e-mail list as they will often have evening or weekend seminars from local guides that are really good for gathering information.
Find a local fishing buddy (old guys are the best!) that doesn't mind taking you out on your local waters. Fifty bucks for gas and bait for you and son along with not being a jerk on the boat will get you lots of information as well. I've meet a couple guys on fishing forums and a couple from work that taught me tons of information and now we are very good friends. We are always trading trips.
Looks like you are far away from me but you and son would be welcome on my boat. Of course scheduling stuff can be a pain but I usually find it eventually works out.

If it wasn't the dead of winter I would try and get you out on my boat. The only thing going right now is some left over chum and winter blackmouth. If anything I'm sure we could meet for coffee and I could divulge what I know.

I know that the majority of Salmon season is over. I just want to gather as much info as possible, build up the right gear throughout the winter, learn and build up information on fishing, and set a strategy to get my 9 yr old boy out on the water fishing specifically next year for salmon to get him as many chances possible (I'm not too confident in this line of fishing...grew up fishing on small brooks in northern Maine for trout...)

It seems as though he's built salmon fishing up in his mind that this is where it's really at here in the PNW. He's gone trout fishing and caught a bunch of keepers. He loves the idea of going after a sturgeon one day. He'd love to try his hand at bass, crappie, and bluegill. He's heard about walleyes and it intrigues him a bit. But for some reason, he's downright obsessed with salmon...
I'd love to get him on a boat (as I don't own one) and would love to see him find success. I'm at a real loss there, because I can't afford to pay a guide $300-$400 each time I want to get him on the water...and that option never seems to work out for me anyway (each time I've paid for a guided trip I've never caught one salmon). I'd be more than willing to chip in on gas for the boat and food. And frankly, if it means driving a ways to get him on the water, I'm down with that...

Salmon University is a pretty good website. Lots of articles. Listen to the Outdoor line Saturday mornings. KIRO 710, friend of mine Rob Endsley knows a thing or two about fishing, as does Tom Nelson.

I'd be more than happy to take you and your son out fishing this summer for kings out off of port Angeles. I always take the 1st 2 weeks of July off of work to fish. Usually fish Freshwater Bay.
