Took this buck on Sunday the 15th with my dad, who goes by Jaques Bonet on this forum. Camera says the 14th, apparently I need to change the date on the camera.
Started hunting Friday the 13th. We saw a dozen or so bucks on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. None of them were really as big as I was looking for. I passed on a decent 10 point Saturday afternoon, that was a tough thing to do, but everyone had told me there was a chance at something bigger and I had another 5 days to hunt.
Flash forward to Sunday morning we see another young 10 point chasing a doe but not much else. About 10 in the morning we move to another area with a good spot for us to hide and try to grunt in a buck. We get set up, let out a few grunts and wait 15-20 minutes, no action, no buck. Time for a few more grunts. Let out 3 grunts and wait again, maybe 5 minutes goes by and this buck comes popping up over a small ridge to my right at about the 3 o'clock position and maybe 100 yards out. He's looking right at us, but he's not sure what we are and what's going on. He's sniffing the air and stomping his feet at us, but he doesn't take off. He'll walk 10 yards or so and then snap his head up to look us over, he does this until he's about 20 yards away from us when he gives me a clean shot before he can get all the way downwind of us.
So at 20 yards with a bit of a harsh quartering away shot I hit him in the left shoulder and the bullet hit the heart, one lung and the liver before exiting between the last 2 ribs on his right side. He turned downhill and ran a few hundred feet before he fell.
We had a great time! It's been about 5 years since my father and I last got to hunt together and to have him there to help grunt in this buck and share in the moment was great.
