Title: Why Why Why did I buy a 52?
Post by: floatinghat on December 03, 2015, 04:51:35 PM

Not really a question I like slightly odd ball things.  Anyway, I just ordered a 52 from Knight (Extreme).  I could use some help on the sights, thinking williams FP, and maybe changing the ramp and going with a hood.  Which ramp and front sight ?  I searched as I thought it was listed here somewhere but can't find the post.

The next questions loads,  I have fffg  777 but it looks like all of the loads I found listed are ffg vs fffg, would fffg product too much pressure at the same volume?  I have 100 sabot (silver) coming so I would love some ideas, for messing around and hunting.

From what I've seen on various sites, I think you are fine with fff 777.  I used that this year in my .50 cal. I am, of course, not a metalurgist, engineer, or powder specialist.....    :o   :chuckle:

Some reasons I would consider a .52:
Faster twist barrel than a .50
You can easily shoot .458 bullets with the proper sabots and there are some dandy .458's like the Speer 350 gr flat point jacketed.
It should hit like the hammer of Thor!

i have not noticed that there is a different rate of twist between the 52 and 50, what are the specifics before I go looking for the information.

Buddy and I bought a couple and they are the absolute elk bomb!  We shot two big bulls and they just folded in their tracks like they'd been hit by a Mack truck... we could not have been more impressed.  I could even keep it on paper at 300 yards with the Williams peep sight, another thing I had trouble with using the old .50 cal..  We're getting the same velocities with the .52 cal. that we were with the .50 cal., but the bullet is 50% heavier which translates to energy that's not even in the same category... is does kick a little though :chuckle:

We are shooting a duplex charge; 5 grains of Triple 7 in fff as an ignition charge for 140 grains of Blackhorn 209 powder; pushing 375 grain Barnes Red Hots... all with the German No. 11 percussion caps.  No swabbing at all between shots and no cleaning until we're done at the range... it's about as user friendly as we've ever seen!  This combination is all we shoot and is a flat out elk killing machine, with lots of range and power!

I had a rough idea of what I wanted for a peep sight and just called Williams directly to have them walk me through it, they were super helpful.

Hope that give you some ideas!

MDC,

Great to hear,  I bought because I was telling a buddy about the great deal and even though he hunts east side and I hunt west... so we both ended up getting one.   It will go well with the my 2  50 cals.  I am excited to hear about the duplexing with 209 and was concidering duplexing my knight 50. How are you loading the duplex with the "extended stem" breach plug?

We ordered some of the 375gr and a 100 silver sabots to try different bullet combos.  I am also looking to try the 300 and 400 gr Barnes Originals as well as some cheaper bullets for practice.

Are you using Williams FP with the standard front sight?

Whacker 1  .50 twist 1-28, .52 twist 1-26 will help stabilze those longer bullets.

I have an older Remington .54 ML.  I think it is 1-26 also.

Thank you for sharing.

Just using the regular breech plug.  We are using one of Williams fiber optic front sights, but nothing fancy aside from that.

Good luck, those things are unbelievable!  Thinking of adding a muzzlebreak though, it'll bruise you something fierce if you don't keep it in the right spot!
