Post by: stew pidasso on December 05, 2015, 12:36:14 PM
Anybody been up forest service rd 250 towards kelly creek ranger station in the month of Feb. I'm wondering if they keep it accessible to vehicles. I'm going to find some wolves. The red is also known as french mt red.

I've hunted that area down along the north fork of the Clearwater. Getting over French mountain from pierce  that time of year might be hairy but there is a lower elevation road I believe it's called beaver creek or something that will get you down there. I saw a wolf the first night just driving down the road and my cousin saw a whole pack running down the road in his headlights. Great area for wolf hunting. I actually found a dead wolf on the side of the road down there and told a trapper about it and he said it broke one of his snares but died still. I was riding my bike up and down the road really quiet, not a bad way to hunt them and cover ground.

Thanks duckslayer89, I'll check in to beaver creek rd. I used to go camping in between wietis creek an 4th of July creek so I know that area pretty well. Just not in Feb. Forest service hasn't returned my message about if they keep those roads maintained.

Ya they closed that bridge down forever getting over to the Weitas but now it's back open! I went elk hunting down there about 6 years ago with my cousin and loved the place. It's unfortunate the wolves have brought that lolo elk herd from upwards of 16,000 to less than a estimated 1000. That's straight from fish and game. It's great country to hunt, I actually was into elk every day almost back when i was hunting down there but didn't see one deer. I talked with my cousin about wintertime down there and he said at one time you were able to snowmobile down there and stuff but forest service shut it down. Let me know if you hear anything I might be getting some time off after January and would like to try for a wolf over there.

Sounds like fun.  Had one in the crosshairs in Wyoming this year.  They are starting to mess up our elk area.
