Title: First time Geese
Post by: ron9909 on December 06, 2015, 08:45:23 PM
My boy and I went out to the local area to do some duck hunting. There were a few ducks flying but never came close enough to shoot. Around 2 we had a group of geese flying around the area. Never had geese fly into this area. They made there way down and were heading into are duck decoys. A young hunter down from us began to call the geese. They came down into are decoys and we let them have it. Dropped 4. My dog who has never seen a goose up close jumped into the water and headed for the first one. When she grabbed it she was like what the heck is this. After adjusting the bird she swam back to shore dropped the bird and headed back for more. She grabbed another one and headed for another. She realized she could not grab 2. She began to push the 2nd one with her head while keeping the other one in her mouth. I went out and grab the one from her so she could get back to shore. The 4th bird was still out in the water and the young hunter who was calling when they were flying said I think I only hit one. I was like ok I guess. He was so excited about calling the geese and getting to shoot at them. He was saying my Grandpa is going to be so excited that I got a goose. I told him would you like another. I gave him another goose to take home.  He called his grandpa and headed back to the parking lot. All and all it was a great day to be out hunting. My boys first goose. My dog retrieving her first goose and watching a young hunter getting excited about calling in some geese and watching how excited his Grandpa is going to be.

Geese are always a nice bonus when duck hunting. Very sportsmanlike of you to let the kid take credit for one of the birds, and to share the others.

Congrats on the geese!!

But how close were you and the young guy hunting from each other? He said he was shooting at them when you and your boy were shooting at them in your decoys? Having someone close enough to even think about shooting at birds in my decoys is way too close for me.

My guess he was maybe 80 yards from us. It is a public hunting area with 5 blinds. Parking area has designating parking spots. The number you park at is the blind that you are suppose to go to. The blinds are about 80 yards apart.

And the geese were literally landing in your decoys? And he was shooting at them when you were shooting?

Sounds like a young hunter that maybe doesn't quite have his range estimating down.  I think the OP handled it wonderfully.  Also, maybe the OP's dekes were set towards the kid's side?  I see people all the time on here talking about successful 50-60 yard shots.....

I agree 100%. By no means was trying to say the OP was in the wrong, just trying to picture the scene.

It does sound like a hunt area set up for conflict, seems goofy to me.

80 yards is too close together.

Sounds like you could really pepper your neighbor if not careful at that range.  I know T, BBB or BB's at 80 yards would mess someone up if not careful at that range.

Before they made the blinds and the parking it was really bad. I like the idea that Fish and wildlife got this area for hunters and took control of the really bad combat hunting. There is not a lot of areas around here to hunt.  For the young hunter. I would say he was shooting a little to far away and yes towards are decoys. Most of the shooting is out towards the water. In the picture you can see how far blind number one is from us. We were in blind two.

Being rained on from 150 yards doesn't feel good... 80 yards is way to close. Maybe your guesstimation is off? Hard to believe they would make blinds that close to eachother
