Title: 6010 mallis cow tag
Post by: xxlx7 on December 16, 2015, 10:32:19 AM
Well I never got my sights on a bull during modern season, we drew the late cow tag for mallis, and doing my research there's some decent public access, but if anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to filling the freezer with a nice meat elk!

What are the dates for your hunt? My daughter and her cousin drew the youth tags that started yesterday through the end of the month. I'll be down there this weekend and let you know what i find.

same season, I'll be down there late Friday thru Sunday. Hopefully we will see some animals, I'll pm you my number, text me and if we see animals I'll text you where we are at, we only have one tag to fill, and so far I've heard there are plenty of animals down there

Looks like this will be a tough hunt. We have some great private property to hunt but it sounds like the elk numbers are way down and what's there is plagued with hoof rot. Apparently it's really bad around there. Hopefully the elk move back in after settling down a little after the ML and archery season. Never even saw a fresh track today.
Looks like 20 tags for this hunt, 10 for youth and 10 general cow and didn't see another hunter today. Majority is all private and not a big unit at all. But if they come back in, we will be ready. Hopefully before the season ends on the 31st though.

Its a thin hunt this year for sure. Driving into the unit we saw a few hundred elk, just shy of the unit. Saw a few on private property, and was sadly declined when we asked the property owner, we did explain to them why they were limping, the wife was concerned. Hoof rot is bad down there. We ran into four different hunters on the north side of the hwy, nobody saw elk. I found three cows at the end of last night, checked my gps and was outside the boundary line so I had to turn away. Tough for sure. Had to leave and head home unexpectedly, will be back next weekend after xmas to hopefully put down a Christmas present for myself.
