Title: Hunting in the UK
Post by: Shooting Stix on December 30, 2015, 10:27:59 AM
i have the privilege to travel and hunt this year and to end the year I got a chance to hunt in England. So one of my friends and hunting consultants that I book for invited me to hunt a Red Stagg which was a dandy stagg. Alex picks me up at the hotel and we drive out to our hunting property with heavy winds and rain so weather wasn't so great but I was so happy to get in the woods. We stalked around the wooded area where the herd of red deer like to hang out and as we crest the hill there was herd of red deer, Sika deer, and fallow deer. Animals were coming out of everywhere so it was an awesome site to see about 250-400 yards away. So myself and the guide got up to the high seat and the other two guides did a push and the whole herd of 30-40 animals which my stagg was with 4 other great trophy stags and smaller stags. Finally the stagg offered a quartering to or almost chest on shot so I took it and watched it go down I then stalked up on a herd of 10-15 Sika deer with 1 shooter stagg and took a 150 yard shot which the shot was little far back but enough to do the job. It was a great experience and turned out fun with quality animals and best of all the people I was with had the same passion for hunting than I do so it made it even better

To the OP:  Tell us a bit more about the type of hunting.  Were you in England or Scotland?  Are these crown lands, or private estates?  Is this what we would call "private timber lands" or something else?  What is the licensing requirement there (are there general season hunting licenses for big game, or no license if on private estates, or what)?

Those are beautiful animals, but I have no idea about hunting there.  I assume Northern Ireland is so small, there would be no big game hunting there, so any U.K hunting would have to be in England or Scotland (Wales also seems small).

For our education, please give some more details.  Thanks.

There is no license needed it was an estate hunt where you just pay the price of the animal and daily rate which before the hunt they explain the price Alex is an honest guy who has in the business for a long time. This is just one hunt in the southern region of England but every place and hunt is different. If you are going to hunt for a quality animal with a high success it will be a estate hunt or park hunt. There is hunting in Ireland believe it or not and England has the big stags and Scotland they are small stags the saying is you hunt Scotland for the experience not the head. England has so many animals it will blow your mind some animals you never knew existed. Gun is provided at no cost but no bowhunting.

Was this is a high fence hunt? How big was the property you hunted?

Yes it was a high fenced hunt on an 800 acre estate which you won't find a stagg this big in the wild just running around in the UK. The hunt was a fun hunt do to the fact that there was so many deer in a herd that you really had to be patient to get a shot. My Hungary stagg was free range and I saw 5 deer in 4 days and shot the first stagg I saw which cost me double than this Stagg which I felt like I had just as much fun as hunting free range.
