Good morning all. I rarely post on here, but do read the threads often. The reason for my post today is to see if there would be a chance the community on here would be willing to help out this young man? He is new to hunting, only in his second year, and absolutely loves the outdoors. I've been fortunate to have coached this young man the last four years, and he and his family have become close friends.....You see, late this spring or early this summer he will be going in for open heart surgery. I contacted DFW to check about the special permit to allow him to harvest an elk or a deer, to see if he would possibly qualify. Because the RCW is written in such a way he would have to be in the last stages of life, he doesn't qualify. DFW has been good in pointing me towards some land owners who may be willing to allow him to have a damage tag for cow elk, but I haven't heard anything back from those landowners. And, when speaking to the landowners, they were very understanding and thoughtful of the situation. DFW was as well.
My question to you all here would be: do you happen to know of any landowner who may have a depredation/damage tag available that would be willing to let this young man have an opportunity to harvest an elk this year? I would be willing to trade out a day or two worth of work over the summer for the landowner in exchange for the privilege for him to hunt. If you know of anyone, please let me know. You can reply here, or you can PM me. Also, he and his family do not know I am trying to do this for him, as I would hate to get their hopes up.
Thank you in advance.
-
tagging just to follow. Hope it works out and if it does, please post up a few pics of him on his hunt.
-
Thank you! Will do!
-
Those landowners are few and far between here on the wetside. I hope you have some luck finding someone. If there's some other way I can help, please PM. Best of luck on this search.
-
Thank you pianoman! I appreciate it. We live in Eastern Washington, but would travel if the opportunity presented itself.
-
PM sent.
-
Thank you WSU!
-
My brother Groundhog and I would feel privileged to help out this young man. I assume he has school until this week? PM me and we will work out the logistics. More then likely we will still have plenty of elk around until this weekend. We are in Ebrg so not too far to travel.
-
Good on you guys Pinetar! Prayers for the young man
-
Thank you all for the replies!! And prayers! Even if the the tag doesn't come through, it won't be for lack of trying or compassion, that's for sure!
Much appreciated!!
-
Pine tar and ground hog are good guys take them up on the hunt. We need to shoot a few they are damaging the blank out of their property, mine and neighbors fences, fields, trees and hay right now! They are here everyday getting farther and farther into the valley daily. Hope to see the kid get an elk. Good luck get a hold of them! I thought that the WDFW tries to use depredation hunts to control the damage ??
-
How about we all pitch in? Drum up a quick 50K and he can shoot any elk he chooses! :chuckle:
That's great that he is getting some love and land access. Best wishes only from my end of the keyboard.
-
Thank you guys!! It's been nothing but positive thoughts and great folk wanting to lend a hand! I will for sure post pics if/when he gets one.
-
Shane, I received your PM. The email address you provided doesn't seem to work and I wasn't sure if you received my PM. I called the ph# you provided and no answer or machine.
I can take him Saturday or Sunday. Saturday works best since I have a couple other kids on Sunday but if it is Sunday it won't be a problem. Just let me know by PM. If you received my PM you should have my ph#

Good morning all! First all of, I want to thank all that have replied, offered prayers, help, gear, and the opportunity!! Good news-the young man was offered a tag (actually two different folks offered-which goes to show us that hunters do have the best of intentions and hearts!!!) and he will be going over this Saturday for his opportunity!! What a true blessing. There are a few I will thank in particular, and I will do that when I add pic's of his hunt after Saturday (and with their permission to post who they are on the forum).
My family and I were able to go to dinner with the young man and his family last evening. I had informed his father earlier in the day about the possibility, who in turn informed the boy's mother. As we were sitting at dinner I asked the mother if they had said anything to him about the tag. Mom replied "no" we were waiting for you to do it". So I brought him over and sat him down and asked "hey bud, what do you have going Saturday?". He thought for a few seconds, probably worried that I was going to have him come out and help my son move the firewood pile or something :chuckle:, and said "nothing, why coach". I said, well, I reached out to some friends on the hunting forum and explained a little about what's going on with you, and was hoping to get you the chance to maybe go shoot a cow elk in the near future through a damage tag". He sat there. I was like "well, would you be interested?". He was like "heck yeah!!!'. I said, well through the generosity and caring of some individuals on the forum, you were given a damage tag to go and do just that! You get the chance to go over this Saturday and try for an elk!" He sat there again trying to process what I just said. And sat there, then said REALLY!! REALLY!! I get to go shoot an elk?!?!!?!?!?! NO WAY!!! He almost jumped out of his seat at the restaurant!! I wish I would have videoed the conversation actually! He was so excited!! It was like he just hit a walk off homerun!! He said " I really get to go and shoot an elk, that is flippin' awesome!!
Anyway, the look on his face was priceless. He could barely contain himself the rest of the time at dinner. I bet he even had a bit of a sleepless night last night?! That will be nothing compared the sleepless night he has Friday night before his very 1st elk hunt!!!!
Again, thank you all so very much! My night might be pretty darn sleepless Friday as well :-)
-
That is Awesome.  Good luck, and have a safe hunt.
-
This is one of many reasons I love hunting. It can bring out the highlight of any situation. And it really shows show us as hunters can pull together and make someone's dream come true. Can't wait to hear the outcome. Good luck.
-
Thats awesome to see in this day where hunting has become so much about the money. Good luck, and can't wait to see some kill pictures!
-
Thank you guys! The boy is darned excited! He has never actually seen an elk in the field before, so this is going to be an unforgettable experience for him!!
-
Your update has made my day. Hats off to those that can help with the tag. Tell the boy to squeeeeeze that trigger!

From a father of a child with a congenital heart defect, THANK YOU. This thread made my day. My son will be needing his second open heart surgery when he is about the same age as this boy. It excites me that people out there care so much. :) I am looking forward to pictures!
-
Just another solid testament to the AMAZING FAMILY we have on this forum :IBCOOL:. At some point maybe we should have a sticky thread with the stories of things this forum has been able to pull off to help those in need. Absolutely one of the main reasons I have stuck with this forum.....the only forum I am a member of. Great job to all involved, good luck to the hunter, now bring on the success pictures .
-
Well how'd it go today??
-
If I may (for one post) hijack this thread.
(I also can't wait for pictures!)

Still packing meat out ???????

Still packing meat out ???????
I don't think that is it as I offered to help pack out if needed but didn't get a call today.
Sure hope they hook the kid up!

One of the nicest kids that I have ever met with great parents, coach (Shane) and friend. He had a shot or two this morning that he could have taken from 200 to 250ish but it was very foggy. He didn't want to chance a shot in the fog as he couldn't see clearly through the scope. I was very impressed with his decision for a young man! If you are not comfortable with the shot, don't take it. He was taught well.
We saw some decent bulls, which was the first for him :) Back at it again in the morning.

Save the head...may e a forum taxi will step up and clean the skull for him.
-
Make sure he pulls those whistlers and gets them polished up! A little time simmering in a pan of water to soften the tissue. Scrape it off with a thumb nail. Then a few days in a pants pocket and they should be looking good!
Congrats once again to all involved! Looking forward to pictures!

Great suggestion h20. Shane, groundhog, or pinetar, could I impose on you to see if the young man would accept a donation of a skull mount on some killer old barn boards? You can PM or call me at 485-1910. I am picking up some taxidermy work in Brewster on the 22nd if that would work and could delivery it back when done.
Many thanks to the guys who made this happen. Heartwarming.

WOW!!! What a great experience. We have a huge family, I have been involved in more kids getting animals than you could imagine. This might be the highlight of all. One of the coolest, nicest kids I have ever had the experience to be on a hunt with. Grandpa, Mom, Dad and Shane, you have raised this guy the right way and should be very proud of this young man.
Thank you Shane (mhbrewster71) for making this happen, you are the man behind this and arranged it all! And Thank You Brennan, it was a real pleasure meeting you and I look forward to our next hunt together.
I will let them tell the story and provide you all with pics!
Papaonthemountain - Thank you for the great offer. PM mhbrewster71 (Shane) as I'm sure he will take you up on that offer.
-
Thanks Pinetar, will PM Shane.
-
  Congratulations to all involved, Awesome in so many ways.
-
Pintar and Groundhog ... Thank you for making this happen  This is the kind of thing I spoke about on the auction thread and I think that this area should be for kids like this, wounded warriors and seniors! All of the hunting community look better when these types of things happen so I am grateful for your contribution! :hello:
Congrats to the hunter I can't wait to hear more and see the pics!!!

Tag. This is awesome!

Good morning all! I know you are all itching for an update and photos, and I'll get to that in a minute. First of all, I would like to thank Pinetar and Groundhog, from the bottom of my heart for their generosity and caring. It is hard to explain what a special experience this was for all involved, but from the moment we pulled onto their property at 6:00 AM Saturday we felt welcomed. By the time we left on Sunday, it felt like we were part of the family! Truly and honestly, it was a privilege for us to have this happen, and all the while, Pinetar and Groundhog felt it was their privilege to make it happen. By the time Brennan had his elk back to their barn, there were 10-15 people who came by to meet Brennan and congratulate him!! I cannot thank Pinetar and Groundhog enough. As a "family" of hunters, we made it happen for Brennan. Just typing this up kind of makes me choke up a bit. I re-read all three pages of the thread. All the thoughts, and prayers, and offerings. I know I shouldn't be amazed at how caring and generous the hunting community is, but I am nonetheless amazed and humbled. Thank you all!! I am also truly humbled by the praises I have received. It is hard to accept accolades and praise. In my mind all I did was ask a question for a boy that has become like part of my family, which I think we all would do. I think it was HNTFSH who stated I was a man among men. I think as a hunting community, we all deserve the praise. WE ARE CITIZENS AMONG CITIZENS!! [/b. So, I want to thank YOU ALL. It will be a memory that will last a lifetime for us all, and a story passed on from Brennan to his friends, and Lord willing, to his children. A story passed down from one generation to the next. A story that will always put a smile on someone's face when they hear it, whether today, tomorrow, or years from now. A story of hunters gathering together to help out a fellow hunter. For that, and all of the smiles and memories, I thank you all.
Now to the hunt. We pulled into Pinetar and Groundhog's property Saturday morning at 6:00. There were a few others there as well as Pinetar and his brother. We introduced ourselves, shook hands, and got to know one another before the hunt began. Pinetar had already let us know that at 7:15 we'd be heading out. After meeting Pinetar and his brother, you could tell they were equally as excited to be a part of this as we were! Energy levels were high, as was the excitement level. I can say for me that I had trouble sleeping from about Wednesday on, getting up around 2:30-3:00 most mornings playing out what the hunt was going to entail, in my mind. And, after talking with Brennan and his mother and father, I wasn't the only one. We went into the office to warm up a bit and Brennan's mother had to sign a form (I can't recall what for). Around 7:00 or so Pinetar showed me how to run their 4-wheelers. I'd never driven one with the snow tracks on them. Pretty cool attachments. Pinetar informed me that I was the lucky winner of driving the one without power steering :-) My son Drake was riding with me, later in the morning said "dad, this doesn't seem like you need power steering at all". I said "yeah, it's not too bad once you get moving" thinking to myself
yeah, gotta act cool in front of my boy" :chuckle: Well, on the drive home, my arms didn't feel so "cool". Anyhow, we left the barn around 7:15, Pinetar and Brennan riding together. Brennan's mom and grandpa staying back at the barn. Only about 10 minutes into the drive up the hill Brennan spots a nice young bull-the first time he'd ever seen an elk. We all stopped and watched it trot off. Pretty darn cool!! Then, just a few minutes later my son taps me on the shoulder and says "dad, there's two". Brennan and Pinetar had seen them too, and had stopped. Pinetar got Brennan set up to shoot, and Drake and I stood behind as the 300 Mag would have a bit of a loud "pop" :tung: . Brennan was on the second cow going from right to left, a big one, and holding steady. The fog was starting to roll in and it was becoming hard to see them through the scope. There might have been one split second where Brennan could have taken the shot without the fog, but the cow had started walking, and Pinetar had said to wait for them to stop moving, and Brennan held off. The elk started moving off to the West, and we got back on the quads and headed that way. We spotted them again, and this time Pinetar got Brennan set up prone on the ground with the bi-pods. Brennan could see the elk, but not very clearly through the scope as the fog line was right there. We sat there for a good five minutes while Brennan had them in the scope, but not clearly, and then like a ghost, they disappeared. My hat goes off to Brennan for his patience and character. Seeing his first elk ever, holding a high powered rifle on a cow elk he could shoot, and choosing NOT to shoot because it wasn't clear enough, not something you see everyday, especially out of a 13 year old hunter, holding down on an elk!! Elk do crazy things to people, but Brennan kept his calm, didn't get excited, and made a very mature decision to not take the chance. Atta boy B!! We drove to the otherside of the property to glass and found 30 or more elk, but most of them on property we could not hunt. Saw a few more bulls, and lots of cows. It's hard to calm the excitement when the elk are so near, yet untouchable. Brennan was a trooper and sat there glassing, taking it all in. I do have to tell you this part-so as we were sitting there glassing all those elk, I noticed a bunch of elk pee on the ground in the snow. I winked at Drake and said "hey B, I think it'd be a good idea if you'd go over there and rub that elk pee all over your clothes. That way it will hide your scent if we have to go some stalking" He looked at me like I was crazy. I'm known to my baseball players as a big jokester, and they can usually tell when I'm joking. Pinetar and I went back to glassing the elk. The next thing I know I look back and there is B, taking that snow and rubbing it up and down the front of his clothes. I started laughing out loud. Not a great thing to do when you are glassing. Drake started laughing, and B was Like "what"?? Pinetar turned around and asked what we were laughing about. I told him the story. We all had a good chuckle. Brennan is a great sport and was laughing along with us. He said "coach, you had your serious face on, so I went and did it". I did tell him later that day that cover scent is important, but today I think we'd be okay without it :tung: Another chuckle from B and myself.
When we got back to the barn we discussed whether it would be worth sticking around for the afternoon/evening hunt, or just come back tomorrow. It was decided that coming back in the morning would be a better idea. I was kind of bummed as I didn't know if I could come back because I had open gym for baseball at 1:30 on Sunday. Brennan's grandpa said he would bring him back Sunday, and another plan was set. We said our goodbyes and hit the road home. About 15 minutes out of town I look in my rearview mirror and see Brennan, Drake and Brennan's mom sacked out. I wish I could have turned around and taken a picture with my phone. I think all three of them may have been drooling ;-)
When I got back to home I decided that I would be able to go on Sunday's hunt!! I just had to take my own rig. Sunday we roll in to Pinetar and Groundhog's barn around 6:30. We all sit around chatting, shooting the breeze, and looking forward to today's hunt. Pinetar says the elk were down, and points out where they were headed. I decided to stay back at the ranch and let Brennan's grandpa and mom go out with Pinetar and Brennan. I really wanted them all to be there when/if he took his first elk. Pinetar and I talked for a bit and decided to head out a couple minutes later because the day before we had spooked a group of about 30 that we didn't see as we drove up the hill. So Brennan and the group took off up the hill on the quads. I had started up my truck to warm up a bit, and then stepped out to grab a water out of the back. Literally within 10 minutes of them leaving the ranch, and about one minute of me stepping back in the truck to get warm I received a text from Brennan's mom saying "He got her!!!!!!!" That was at 7:25 AM :-) I replied immediately "Seriously"?!?!?!!?! Can you believe it took her 3 minutes to reply back!!!! :tung: That felt like forever!!!!! I sat there for a few minutes after her reply, thanking God for this opportunity, for the new friends we had made, and the gift of the elk he had given to Brennan. Groundhog came over and offered up his quad, and off I went to help with the "taking care" of the animal. It was AWESOME to walk up to Brennan, his family, and Pinetar, seeing them all grinning from ear to ear. Not to mention my grin!
We took care of the animal and got her back down to the ranch where many were waiting to lend a hand with skinning. Brennan jumped right in, as Pinetar, Brennan's grandpa and others were showing him the ins and out of skinning an elk. I even learned a few new tricks.
There are many people we'd like to thank that aren't mentioned in this post, and I'll do that in another post. For now, a HUGE thank you to all involved, all who offered prayers, assistance, and other awesome items for Brennan!!
Thank you again-mhbrewster71-Shane
PS-I've never posted a picture here, so please let me know if they came through.

Man, you got to like a story like that from a community like this!! Nice work by all involved .
-
Great job!!!!! This is exactly what the uninformed public needs to understand about the real hunters of our community. So glad to be part of a community that can do so much. That boy and his family will always remember this and will hopefully pass on the same culture in which you all have introduced them too. Way to go.

Awesome  What a blessing for the boy. Good on all involved.

Thank you all!! It was one of the most fun experiences I've been involved in! There are several others we'd (the family and myself) like to thank: ICE-CAP, Spot and Stalk, WSU, go cougs, H20, and Jackelope. Many of you we have never met, but someday would really like to shake your hand and say thank you in person. Also, papaonthemountian and an un-named fellow hunter who has offered to pay the cut and wrap. All of you offered very generous items, help, you name it! We cannot thank you enough. Without this community, Brennan would have one less GREAT memory and story to share. We all would have one less.
Again, thank you all so very much.

Since WDFW usually doesn't get a lot of good press.
I would like to thank WDFW for giving Brennan a "kill permit" to take an elk. When I went to the local office and told them the situation they instantly said " no problem, let's make this happen" and issued a special permit for Brennan.
-
Do you mean the WDFW?
-
Yep Fat fingers lol
-
Wow...and I didn't think this story could get any better. That's awesome to hear something positive on here about the WDFW.

:yeah: I assumed you already had the permit ready to issue, Pinetar. Kudos to WDFW!

Below is my original post: Following my original post is a thank you letter to all that offered help, prayers, items, and good thoughts, from Brennan's parents. They asked that I post it on here.
From Brennan's parents:
As we sit down to write all of you that made this lifelong memory possible, it becomes evident to us right away, that there are no words that could adequately show our appreciation. Every one of you has etched an amazing experience into our son's life forever.
That being said, one of the things we have noticed throughout this experience is, we often found ourselves saying, "They didn't have to do that'. And it wasn't until today that we realized the significance of it. The fact that each and every one of you didn't have to do what you did, really makes it what it is. You did it for the sole purpose of giving our son an experience of a lifetime. And that was it! It wasn't contingent on something else, it wasn't to benefit you at all, and it certainty wasn't because you were under any obligation to do it. It is a true reflection of who each and every one of you are.
So, we truly thank you with everything we've got!
We can only pray that we are able to pass along the kindness you all have shown to Brennan to someone else someday. And that we are able to recognize the opportunity as you all have. More importantly, we pray that this experience has also etched that desire into Brennan's heart as well.
We have always told Brennan that his heart condition is going to give him some amazing opportunities to help people in the future. He will be a testimony of God's power, grace, and love. We tell you all this, because knowing what this meant to him will encourage him to return the gift to someone else in his position someday. We often don't take the time to recognize the effect a good deed will have down the road. But, I hope you all do in this situation.
Thanks again I hope to thank you all in person soon.
Ryan and Holly Moody
P.S. We know some of you have wanted to know how things go with Brennan in the future. So as the surgery date gets closer, we will be starting a blog or facebook page to keep everyone posted. Just send mhbrewster71 your email address and I'll make sure you get the link.
-
We did, but WDFW issued a special permit (kill tag) just for Brennan when they heard about the situation. They were very helpful. So "YES" Kudos to WDFW as well!!
-
Agreed!! Thank you for pointing that out Pinetar. Kudos to DFW as well!
-
Congrats and great story....
