Title: Where do you shoot?
Post by: Jamieb on January 25, 2009, 09:18:36 PM
At a public range , private range, or in the woods?
I've been a member of a couple of different ranges, Evergreen sportsman's club and P'El sportsman's club. The solid benches and covered shooting areas were nice but anymore I go out in the woods to target practice. Where do you guys shoot whether practice, site in, or working up loads?
This is in Capital forest, I shoot here when I'm working up loads or siteing in.

Most of the long range shooting I do up the Skokomish.

I practice my bow, rifle, and pistol at TSC off of Canyon Road.  They have a pretty good walk through course for the bow.  However, their rifle range is only 200 yards.  They also have a skeet range, but I've never used it.

Where is the longest rifle range on the west side?

Is shooting in the woods legal?  I would much rather shoot there than heading over to Wapato to shoot 1000 yards.

It's legal but you have to use common sense. And I wont shoot in some places just becuse of too many folks around.

600 yards at TRRC

550 at my home range, Upper Nisqually Sportsman's Club.

Does TRRC allow 600 yard shooting all the time or just during sanctioned events and special occasions?

Are the roads here in the national forest and state forests considered maintained?  I see quite a few people shooting out the backs of their trucks parked on teh road, and off the side of the road.  I was under the impression that you had to be off the road by a distance.  There were 3 younger guys this saturday with ARs standing in the middle of the road shooting.  Nearly had to drive around them.  One guy was shooting targets off the gate for the closed road.  Its no wonder really that the others dont want us target shooting on public land.  Its only a matter of time before we have no where to shoot.  Try going up to FS7710 on a Saturday for a peaceful drive lol...

Shooting off the hood of a truck or laying in the back are illegal. You cant shoot from a vehicle in WA.

We use the woods.  Have a couple of large rock pits we use for sighting in.  Have a very nice clearcut we use for 400 yd. shooting, with no other roads around.  Have to find a new one in about 3 years though.

We shoot at a small piece of state land not far from the base here.  It has a nice 100 yd lane right into a dirt backstop.

Is that a private road in the first photo?  It looks like you have your chrono set up in the middle of the road and you’re shooting down the middle of the road.   :yike: The 5th photo down looks like you’re shooting across a paved highway.

I've shot at these places w/Jamie... they're all quite safe... and legit. What looks like a paved highway in that picture... is actually an old railroad trussel... and most of the shooting is done onto a hillside to the right of the picture. You want to take a loooooooong poke... Jamie has the places to go.

Private Sand pit for 250 yards and less
Spokane Valley Rifle & Pistol Club @ Mica when I need to shoot longer - out to 1000 meters.  I haven't hit that target yet, haven't tried either, but I like the novelty.
By the way, I haven't shot anywhere, because I am waiting for the snow to clear.  Can't get to the Sand pit and the gun club is closed.  Here is information about Spokane Valley Rifle & Pistol Club@ Mica

OK, I can't believe that this one hasn't come up.  I think it is one of the nice ranges that I have ever spent time on.  I don't go there much since I live in Spokane, but I used to spend some time here.  It goes out to 500 yards, but is probably one of the nicest covered ranges around.  They are always looking to raise some revenue by adding members.

I used to shoot at the Pe Ell range, its a nice range. The reason I stopped going down there is, it takes an hour 45 min. drive from here, the range is closed to many of the weekend days for comp. shoots, and I had a little run in with some members that weren't being very safe and took offence to me pointing it out.

In Capitol forest I set up and shoot on a closed road that ends at the base of a hill. I park at the gate and carry my gear around it. It's only flat for 200 yards but I only shoot at 100 here. I've driven a lot of miles in Capitol Forest and I haven't found any place to shoot longer ranges, there's just too many roads and ATV trails.
Here's some closer pictures of the old trestle that can be seen in one of the other pictures.

Wow, that trestle is cool. Ever walk across it?  :yike:

For 100yd plinking close to the house, we go to the range on Ebey Island east of Everett off Hwy 2. We sometimes drive up to my Dad's place in Concrete. There is a dead end road that ends in a gravel pit with a high bank. The road in is strait, so you can choose your range. We use the range finder to find our mark, then set up our table. For pistols I'm going to start going to Norpoint in Arlington. Been up there and checked it out, but never shot there.

Spot up by Concrete. My 7yr old checking her target. That lil turd is a damn good shot.  :chuckle:

I crossed the trestle a couple of times as a kid but I started out across it a couple of years ago, my legs started to get alittle shaky a few hundred feet off the ground so I turned back.

nice public land about 15 minute from my house. No hiking to set up and have about 300 yards straight to shoot. Another place about 30 minutes I can get almost 600 yards, about 45 minutes I can get 1,000. I am just glad they are not well known as we had a really nice place shut down because of littering.

I thought I had pictures but can't find them.

i found a decent spot out in capital forest a few months back.  you wind your way into the woods about 1/2 mile on a logging road and it dead ends on a ridge with a 180* clearcut.  you can see part of highway 8 way down below off to the right, but off to the left is a big hill, perfectly safe to shoot at.  i mostly shoot clay pigeons there, but i think(i'm a horrible distance judge) there's at least 200-300 yards you could shoot at, if you felt like tromping through the wild blackberries(i might have to go see if they're ripe yet, there's a ton there).

closer to the highway there's a blocked off old skid road, it's a good short range target practice area.  there are 3 markers from the tank trap that blocks it, 50,  75 and 100 yards.  there's an old stump at around 150-200 yards that i've seen targets tacked to also.  only problem with that is that people always leave their junk there.  i usually pick up a grocery bag worth of spent shells and other junk every time i go there :bash:  still nowhere near as bad as that pit off waddell creek rd though

Straight Shooter, there are a few private ranges out on the west plains that get out quite a few yards. Guess it all depends on what your into as far as shooting goes.

If interested, log onto www.westcoasttactical.com  make yourself "known" and what you'd like to find/do.

I don't get on the 'puter much these days, so I can't tell you how long before I'd be able to reply to anything.

You guys should mention that Joel's Mica range doesn't open before 2pm, and he doesn't like 50's blasting up his steel. Did we mention he has steel??? ;)
Title: Re: Where do you shoot?
Post by: whacker1 on June 30, 2009, 08:31:09 PM
he is correct - Joel doesn't like 50's tearing up his steel, but likes it if you are offering to replace his steel.  He likes to have the 50's out there.  He likes the out of the ordinary.

Thanks Whacker and Littletoes for the info.  I was at the Mica range in May to check out their pistol match.  Nice range in a nice setting.  Definitely plan on using it once I have my .308 tactical rig put together.  There's a small range in Deep Creek about 10 minutes from the house.  The price is right and it's close, but it only goes out to 100 yards.  I guess I could use it for quick sight-ins for new rifles or when I change out scopes.

Where is the range at Deep Creek in relationship to hwy 2?  I am not familiar with this one.

there is a nice range over in Post falls that is owned/operated by the Elks if I remember correctly - goes to 200 yards, and hey have it in a hole, so it eliminates much of the windage for sighting in purposes.  Many folks shoot pistols here.  I have been out there for several years, but always like it.

I think that it's on Hallett (from Hwy 2... heading down the hill (going west), turn left on Espanola... a few miles down, you should be able to make a right on Hallett).  It's a small range and you'll miss if not looking hard for it.  I think that the owner's last name is Dolan.

Shoot at a public range north of the Bridge of the Gods. Its at a Skamania County pit. Longview fiber used to let some of their land be used, we had a 150yd range there. BUT PUKES tore it up and was dumping garbage and junk there. Helped clean it up a couple of times but Longview fiber still closed it down. Longview fiber would like to close all of their area off but its mostley public roads to get in there so they can't. Lately the most garbage in the hills I've been seeing is from logging operations anyway.

Don't screw around and just biuld a WIZ BANG. Don't you have a 300 RUM? It's to close to the newton to spend money on one. IMO unless you just want to use allot less powder.

I need to shoot my Newton over a Crono and see what it's doing. I shoot the 200 accubond over 71 grn of H4831sc with a 28" tube. Dave told me it should be right @ 3k

2800 to 2850fps. Chad, his dad,and another hunting partner tried the 200's in thier newtons, we ran them over my croney and they couldnt get to 2800fps with 24" bbls. I'r pushing them 3175fps out of my RUM with 95.5 gr of Retumbo

Ya I was woundering if 3k sounded a lil much for even a 28" brl with the newton. It still shoots them good. The last time I shot it I made a nice group. My thumbnail could cover it up. 5 shots @ 100yrds. no brakes for cool down. I haven't shot it in a few years and need to get it out and ready for bear season this year. Need to get a cheat sheet made for it so I can stretch the legs on it.

The weather should be pretty good this weekend, Ill try to get some shooting and video.
I may have posted this here before but I cant remember. This is from last summer, I was alone so I used the video camera as a spotter, shoot, view video, shoot, view video, worked great.

thanks for the web page. I'll have to get that gun out and get it cronographed so I can use it. I need to buck up and buy one but haven't.
