Proposed bill allows lion trapping
JACKSON — A Lander lawmaker is proposing a bill that would legalize trapping and snaring mountain lions.
The bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Jim Allen would direct the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to set rules and regulations specifying which types of traps and snares could be used for taking the large carnivores.
If it becomes law, Wyoming would be added to a short list of states that permit trapping lions. It also is allowed in Texas and on private lands in New Mexico.
Allen told the Jackson Hole News & Guide that his aim is to give game managers more options to reduce lion populations.
Jackson Hole advocacy groups are lining up in opposition, saying there's no scientific basis to support the idea.
The Wyoming legislative session begins Feb. 8. http://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/proposed-bill-allows-lion-trapping/article_03d2658d-c3bb-5a9f-ae52-bb5fa7a176e6.html#utm_source=trib.com&utm_campaign=%2Femail-updates%2Fbreaking%2F&utm_medium=email&utm_content=headline
