Title: Anyone use Light bars on their trucks?
Post by: DJ_Mack on January 30, 2016, 07:30:56 PM
Looking at putting a light bar on my tacoma under my grill just like the picture below.  I would like to hear from people who have them how much they use them and how they like them.  Thanks everyone.

www.totron.com is just as good as Rigid lights and  alot cheaper. I've used both and TOTRON's are just as good, period.

My buddy has one on his truck, there's absolutely no comparison between the old kc style and the light bars, his is amazing. It's a cheaper model, close to 30".
I'll have one soon, was gonna put one on my truck, but spent my play money on a new engine instead  :bash:

I have 4 RIGID 2x2 inch Duallys on mine now, They only have 4 LED's per light, so 16 LED's total and I don't need my headlights at all. I had 2 TOTRONS on my side x side, they had 6 lights per Dually, same thing.. but, they were $100 to my door with everything you need to hook up.

The RIGIDS were $125 each for less lumens than the TOTRONS.

Put a pair of 8" 40 watt leds from Amazon on my Ram 1500 in slot where tow hooks could go.  Tight fit .  Nice fill light.  Tapped relay into high beam wire.  Liked the switch kit - just a stickon pushbutton I mounted below steering wheel.

Not light cannons more of a fill light.  Want to get a long range light eventially.  Have plenty of light first 50 yards now.

MADMAX, that is exactly what I am looking to do to my Tacoma.  How hard was the install?  Did you buy any special brackets?
Title: Re: Anyone use Light bars on their trucks?
Post by: follow maggie on January 31, 2016, 09:03:48 AM
Look around for the better value. There are only a couple manufacturers taht make the led lights, so everyone is using the same components. One big difference is wiring. I bought a cheap 20" bar off Amazon for about $40 and it had two wirs poking out. You have to get the relay, switch, wire, etc for it, so its probably about $80 when its all bought. I bout a 20" bar from Rough Country that came with a really nice wiring harness with relay, switch, fuses, brackets, etc for $200. The Rough Country is a lot brighter, but the quality of the led themselves appears to be the same. Ridgid has thbeen big name, but are way overpriced in my opinion.

The kids took the truck and brought it back like that one night
yes they had to do a little cutting in the plastic and order beefier brackets
He said it wasnt hard to do
do a youtube and/or google searchs, lots of info on the tacomas and I think its like 30 inches

and no I dont use them in town but on a dirt rd, MT rd or late at night with no traffic
they are sweet

Awesome. I saw on Tacoma world forum that instead of having to drill through the fire wall you can get an electronic wireless relay.  Did they drill through your firewall?

Light bars are the new " Mall Crawler " trend. Over half the people that have them don't need them , but they look cool on the street  :chuckle:. I see so many lifted diesels around town with 50" bars and its obvious the trucks never leave pavement. Ive seen 5 in different parking lots that werent even hooked up, wires just zip tied to the mount. I do have 2 Rigid Dually D2's on my Jeep though and they were totally worth the $. Been thinking about getting a 30" Rigid for the front of the Jeep.

Fogs bother me way less than brights. It seems this winter everyone forgot what that blue light on the dash means when the headlights are on.

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah: !! I love them, I want one on my explorer but I've had some very bad encounters when driving my low car and being completely blinded. They should be turned off like brights when following/crossing another vehicle.

When they're installed on the bottom like MADMAX's it's not bad (looks great BTW).

After having one and seeing the sheer amount of light it puts out in all directions, I can't imagine anyone with a bit of sense thinking it would be okay to have on while driving into oncoming traffic.

:yeah: I can't stand the lights on new cars.

Nothing is as bad as the friction projector lights though.  Somebody who would blind everybody on the road so that they can see better should be whipped with their own car antenna

One thing I might suggest is upgrading your bulbs. My truck is fairly new but the headlights suck (Dodge). I've noticed over the last few years my vision is much more susceptible to bright light. It takes my eye's much longer to adjust after a car passes with bright lights than it ever used to. So I find myself relying on the white line much more now. Which I hate because I want to know if the person coming at me is in my lane. The factory lights in my truck didn't allow enough light for me to even see the white line in oncoming traffic. Couple that with the longer eye adjustment and at times its darn right scary. I've put quality LED bulbs in my truck and its made a HUGE difference, I can see the white line now all the time and I actually have enough light to see after a car passes and my vision is adjusting. Plus LED's light up signs and reflectors at a much greater distance.

Light bars are great on lifted trucks that have never left the pavement. I especially like how they shine thousands of lumens directly into the eyes of other drivers!

That's good food for thought. I'm talking about in my car though, I think it's the same few guys in my area that have lifted trucks with light bars facing down and exactly into my face lol. I've seen lots of cars slam on brakes crossing paths with them. When I'm in my explorer I've never had an issue cuz it sits higher. I just wish they'd be considerate and turn them off when around other vehicles.

If someone let me use a time machine, I wouldn't travel back and see the dinosaurs, or Ancient Egypt, or smother baby Hitler in his crib. I would find whoever figured out how to make cheap subwoofers and shoot him in the face before he could do it.

Auxiliary lighting on public roads is a ticketable offense.
That and left-lane driving should be priority number one.
Foglights do nothing but try to make someone look cool and has the opposite effect.

foglights were incredibly effective when driving in snow on the other side.  Most newer headlights are more than my eyes can handle I have pretty much given up any night driving.  Cannot wait for long days again so I can go places.

If you havent done it yet check out the USMB ulitamate subaru message board. All kinds of trick stuff there. I highly recomend  the strut spacer rear torsion crank, eletric fan with remote switch and re routing the exhaust. U may know the 2 weapoints on those both revolve the head. Keep that baby cool and she will run forever. Also go to a re routed fully whelded exhaoust. A few small bangs on the muffler lip with cause exhaust leaks on the head. The aluminum wont take much of a beating. On my old bratt I went with a cherry bomb and could slide over any obstacle.

I'm not sure what the thing against fog lights is about. They do help to see in fog, and especially in rain. The led lights called fogs, though, aren't fog lights at all. They're really flood lights since they don't cut off the beam and just spray it everywhere.

Anybody running fogs in traffic is going for alpha DB.

Whoa.  Slow down there, pardner.  I run the fog lights on my wife's older Explorer, for the simple fact that they provide extra light below the normal headlight plane.  It really helps me (and my old eyes) see better at night time.  Although I have recently bought new light elements for the Explorer, the headlights are still dim for my vision.

Although you might not realize this, other people do have legitimate reasons for doing what they will.  Judge not, and thou shall not be judged....?

Actually fog lights work well in the fog. That's the only time I use mine and it helps.

I am the one guy in Washington that doesn't turn on my fogs as a fashion accessory.
I am constantly experimenting with my foglights when there are no other drivers around to 'see' what the perceived advantage might be.
My Toyota Tacoma factory fogs only illuminate the curbs 30' in front of my car, nothing down the road that might be of any use at speeds over 20 mph.
In fog, the additional reflection back into my eyes is less effective than not having them on at all.
The majority of drivers that have them run them regardless of conditions.
The reflection of additional lighting from wet pavement into oncoming drivers' eyes is the issue.
In dry weather, the Dbag following me with their fogs on is reflected by my rearview mirror into my eyes, as well.
I am shopping for driving lights with projector beams for auxiliary lighting and retaliation.

:yeah:  washington is the capital of people trying to look big, bad and rugged by spending rediculous amounts of debt on things they dont need or use
Exactly
Anybody running fogs in traffic is going for alpha DB.

Whoa.  Slow down there, pardner.  I run the fog lights on my wife's older Explorer, for the simple fact that they provide extra light below the normal headlight plane.  It really helps me (and my old eyes) see better at night time.  Although I have recently bought new light elements for the Explorer, the headlights are still dim for my vision.

Wow. So just because you don't use them and you don't find them helpful that means no one else can? You sure do think pretty highly of yourself. I use them a lot during hunting season when it is foggy. They help. I also turn them off when there is an oncoming vehicle.

I run my factory foglights on both my truck and my car when it helps illuminate the road.  That's what they're there for.  They are foglights in name only - no law against running factory lighting if it's not foggy out.

You sound very certain of yourself thinkingman.

Just replace your headlight bulbs and fogs with OPT7 LED's. You keep your factory housings and light dispersion but you get much more available light.

If you think headlights and fog lights are a big issue wait until people start smashing into each other because they switched cars with there spouse and forgot they had to actually use there own foot to brake because there other car does it for them while they text.  :bash:

That's exactly why I experiment with the fogs....Is there a benefit other than 'LOOK AT HOW COOL I AM!'
Not very likely.
Why else would they be optional?
If there was a definite benefit and they are legal, and they're not annoying or dangerous to other drivers, why ever turn them off?
It's obvious that the status/image conscious drivers (Lexus/Toyota, lifted trucks/SUVs) are the most common abusers.
Gotta be seen.

Light bar is the topic, these are the newer LED style auxiliary lights
Ever use them or been with someone who has them ?
Have you seen how beneficial (deer avoidance) it would be say traveling between Darrington and the N-cascades highway at 2 am ?
If not, try it.

I must be an idiot after 40 years of doing trips to the hunting areas leaving when most people are in bed to think its better to see the deer first.

I dont use them in town, I figure most people dont, and honestly in my area have seen only one dbag with them on, and thought *censored*!

I find myself in many situations where more light and not less is beneficial. I will be looking at integrating a led auxiliary into my Tacoma with fogs. For normal driving in town hiway other traffic I rarely use the fog lights, but in heavy fog I only use fogs. Sometimes turning my regular headlights off. High mountain fog can be so thick I have had to pull over or inch along,20 mph in those conditions is absurd.

So, just to be clear - you honestly believe that all factory foglights (not the aftermarket LED Lightbars that MADMAX and the rest of this thread is about) that come equipped on cars and trucks are ONLY good for status and the "look at me" factor, and provide no illumination benefit to the driver?  And that is a result of your research... in every vehicle with foglights and through every driver's own pair of eyes?

If you saw what I drive as a daily driver, you would know for sure I'm not trying to draw attention to myself.  But I use the fogs at night all the time, because they illuminate the road better for me to see what's on the ground right in front of the car out to about 15 feet. And since they are a quarter the size of my headlights and only 8-10" off the blacktop, I guarantee you nobody is complaining about me running them.  Just because every car doesn't have them, that doesn't make them less useful.  Doesn't mean every car shouldn't have them if it would help the driver see though.  Up until 1968 seatbelts were an option too.

Nice!  It looks clean, not a hack job, and is low where I would think it would do the most good for you without being a nuisance or a hazard to other drivers.  Well done!

And your license plate will only block 60% of the light bar???

Mount the licence plate above with a slight bend and put some tape on the back side as not to scratch

I mounted the license plate above so it looks good without blocking the light. It took a couple hours to install but was well worth it. My light is a 32" arsenal off-road light from Amazon. It was cheap. So we will see how it does. But I love it so far.

I have all LED's on the front of my rig.  The bar is a cheap 32" off ebay and it works great out in the woods.  The only problem I have found is it blinds the deer so bad they cant see off the side of the road to escape, they just run down the middle of the road until I turn it off.  I wouldn't even think about running it on the road with other vehicles.   :bdid:

Odd question.  When you buy these light bars and the smaller ones.  Do they make a switch board or something to control the lights?

The ones I've had I just used a 40 amp relay and one switch. I believe most are built to be all on or all off.
