Time frame is June 17th until July 22nd or so. It's not big money but I think it's enjoyable work, kind of like trapping. You don't need any experience but you do need a good back.
I tried posting this on T'man a while back to see if anyone might be interested in case my crewman didn't come back, I didn't really get much in the way of able bodied guys replying.

My son did set nets for a season in the late 80s after his senior year of high school. He was in Larson bay on the back side of Kodiak. Where he was at it was a pretty miserable existence for a few months. Checked the nets every 4 hours. No matter what. Plus maintenance and net mending etc. Their bunk was a tin shed with no heat and enough room to stand up out of his bunk and get dressed. Only heat was in the cook area where they had fish for breakfast lunch and diner almost everyday! Said he didn't think he was able to totally dry out the whole time he was there.
I remember him talking about the Family that had the set above them. A man, his wife and their son. They got word that they flipped their skiff. At least 1 person in the water missing. They got up there as fast as they could. Pulled the net as fast as they could hoping to get the missing person out of the water. From what I remember the only survivor was either the wife or the son.
1 season of that was enough for him!

From what I've heard the set netting on Kodiak is a long, hard grind, whereas in Bristol Bay the fish come all at once, and it's over about as fast as it starts.
I like my creature comforts; I have electricity and hot water (shower) and oil heat at my cabin.
A lot of set net operators try to keep their crew occupied with busy work such as mending nets, I just replace my nets when they get torn up, web is cheap. I eat fish occasionally, but I eat better there at fish camp than I do at home; rib-eyes at least once a week, etc..
Safety is my utmost concern; PFD's worn at ALL times while on the skiff, locator beacon on skiff as well as two VHF radios and cell phone.
I have personally known four people (three of them friends) who have drowned in the past year and a half, (not all in Alaska). EVERY ONE OF THEM would be alive today and laughing about the incident if they had been wearing a PFD.
