Title: Drew Huckleberry, GMU 121, with 1 point
Post by: Hunterski on March 24, 2016, 10:22:37 AM
hey everyone! I drew sprint bear Huckleberry GMU 121 with 1 point. it just surprised my, I didn't count on.
well, I went there  scouting once (onXmaps are helpful). I almost always solo hunt big game, and this time I had no time to prepare better than I supposed to. like I said, draw result surprised me. I am going there April 1-3, and then if no luck, another 3 days in May and 3 days in June. I am living in Seattle area and I need to work :) or :(.
Roads are muddy there, very often logs or trees are on the roads. I don't think these conditions will stop me. I have a plan to camp/back pack there. I am gym/crossfit rat and I don't have a problem to make up to 10 miles/day.
for anyone who did hunt in GMU 121 spring - any tips? I know hunters don't share their hunting spots and I feel weird asking for tips. also Should I order bear hunt maps from bearpaw outfitters?
btw, this is my first posthttp://hunting-washington.com/smf/Smileys/default/hello.gif

There are a few bears out first week of april but thats still pretty early.  Our cougar quota hasnt been met yet so if youre going to be hunting here in april BUY A 2016 COUGAR TAG.  Especially if youre going to try calling.

And if youre hiking ten miles in a day, ya might want to slow down a bit and let your binos do some of the work for ya.  Amazing how you can sit and glass an old overgrown cut for a couple hours and see nothing, then a bear just materializes out of thin air.

Talk to Rick Wakefield @ Buck Canyon Lodge.  He has a really good lay of the land.

Like stated before the later in the season the better.  121 has lots of bears and lots of area to hunt.  The Springdale-Hunters road has plenty of timber ground along it  with gated roads that lead into some great country.  Slow down and look for sign and glass the grassy areas.  Good luck.

Bango skank, good point, I have my cougar tag already. and yes, when sitting, glassing, you can see much more. by 10 miles I meant that I can push myself and be uncomfortable if needed. Might be too early, but this is only time I can go hunting; however I saw almost 2 weeks ago bear scat(1-2 days old),  on the road and damaged trees. lot of snow (north slopes), but south and west are good. I am consider about forest burn outs. is it good bear habitat?
Spuddieselwwu - I'll contact Rick for sure this week.
thanks much
