Title: Anyone ever hunt Arkansas?
Post by: jamesfromseattle on April 07, 2016, 08:20:28 PM
Family member is moving to Little Rock, and I'm thinking about heading down for a visit in January or February. They have a ridiculously long season, so archery deer season will still be open.

Never really thought of it as a destination, but their harvest rates are rediculous. Over 200,000 deer last year. Also a really surprising amount of public land. Without turning this into a rant about Washington, it looks like they really take care of their hunters there and make an effort to keep access open.

Sounds like deer are a lot smaller down there, which is fine with me as I am mostly just hoping to get outside and put something in the freezer.

Would love hear about it if anyone has hunted down there before.

Contact MountainWalk (Dan).  He is from Arkansas.  Former guide, bear hunting machine.  Good guy.

The only downside is he thinks fat squirrels taste good.  Nobody is perfect.

I hunted around Hope both bow and muzzy. Id go again if time allowed. If you have family down there your set. Several years back I killed 2 out of state deer for $150! Could have done 4 for a few bucks more. Deer are bigger the more southern you go near the main agriculture areas. Hunt clubs are very common, &some are pretty reasonable. If your staying with family find an off season deal on a climbing stand and have it shipped directly to them and leave it there. My buddy has a couple "on loan". Way cheaper than shipping back and forth. Get a good hard case for your bow or rifle.

Great, thanks guys. Looks like a good opportunity to extend the season.

The stand hunting game is totally new to me. I understand the benefits of being elevated (smell, movement, etc.), but practically speaking is a ground blind a reasonable choice down there? I like the idea of something lighter weight that I can move a couple times throughout the day, especially because I'll essentially be scouting as I go. Falling out of a ground blind also sounds a lot less painful than falling out of a tree stand.

Also got family in the air force and it sounds like they've got some some stands set up on the base that you can use.

WT mostly move 2x a day. Morning and evening. My Buddy put me in one of his trees and If i catch you out of this before i come get you ill beat you within an inch of your life, this aint washington! Some locations require a ground blind, but i love my tree stand.

you can find more info on WT than any of the other deer species.
