Title: 223 Crappie
Post by: jessie88 on April 24, 2016, 11:27:04 AM
Had a fantastic morning out on the water yesterday morning. In 4 hours me and two friends caught 223 keeper crappie.  We probably threw back 150 or so more. All fish came from within 20 feet of the same spot on a big lake.

we all 3 split the numbers up and fillet them and freeze the fillets in water in freezer bags.  they will last a good year at least in the freezer.  Fish tacos are my favorite.

Thanks man! it beat my old record of crappie by a landslide lol i think my personal best before was like 60-80 crappie.  When we left the water we could visually see hundreds of more crappie and they were still biting every cast.

Used to catch a pile of them.  We never keep them, always throw them back.  I only keep salmon and walleye or long cod when open anymore.

Besides bass and walleye fishing I love crappie.  Is that on on the westside?  Funny thing is about crappie they stick to a hole and stay there for the most part.

Yup you find where they are at certain times of the year and it's game on, especially during spawn time.  I'm guessing he was at Lake Washington/Union or Sammamish since he's from Sammamish.  I have a small pond that I'll fish for crappie in the spring and try to keep it on the down low since it doesn't have a limit on it and it could diminish the population, most of the crappie from that pond average 10-14 inches.  Nice job on the crappie though Jessie, hah I don't know if I could clean that many fish.

We use to filet and freeze them in old milk cartons.

I think the best we ever did was 175 or so bluegill back in the day.

FISH FRY!  With french fries and hushpuppies.  Yum!

nice man haha.. it was way too much fun. after like 150 fish or so it started to feel like harvesting instead of fishing. you couldnt cast and look away without a fish on it was nuts. :yike:

I know.  Still better than work.  We would drift a live cricket over spawn beds with floating fly line.  And they could not not bite.

If it matters to anyone that it may seem a bit damaging to the population, you couldn't really hurt the population as they were fairly prolific breeders.  The banks of the bayou looked like a no man's land with all the beds.

I'm jealous!  I've kept and fillet 150-160 yellow perch icefishing, they are darned easy to fillet on a card table, with a few cold beers and a football game on the TV
