Title: Deer Quality points
Post by: Ridgerunner on April 26, 2016, 11:04:47 AM
Just curious what people out there are thinking as it relates to these points.  Does last seasons high harvest and tougher than normal winter impact what those who are sitting on lots of points decide to do?

Yes, I won't be applying for Chelan county or Okanogan county GMU's, for the reasons you stated. Actually I'm surprised they didn't reduce the number of permits, or even eliminate them entirely this year.

I'm not sure why I did it or that I can believe I actually did do it, but I applied for a blacktail quality permit.  :dunno:

I will be putting in for Blacktail units this year since I used my points last year.

Built my points back up to ten and will be putting in as usual.  No high expectations of drawing but by chance I do, know there is still some awesome deer around!

For the last couple years I have just being doing points for the quality deer. I've been trying to draw the palouse buck hunt and figured with about 1:3 applicants getting that tag I was about due to get it with 3 or 4 points. I didn't want to take the chance and get drawn for both buck and quality buck in the same year. I would hope with 5 points this year and low harvest rates from the blue tongue last year that I can draw it this year.

You had 4 and didn't draw Palouse? Man that sucks. It's never taken me more than 2  :yike:

I voted hold them, but not for the reason you specified.

I clicked put in as usual and then realized I am holding them this year but not for the reasons you listed either.

I normally get the multiseason and put in as a team with my kids to get them drawn for a quality permit.  I didn't get the MS deer this year so I will just save my points until I can use them as a team with my kids.

Yea, I drew it in 2011 and haven't been able to get drawn since. I think all of my luck goes to 2nd deer. I have gotten that I think 5 out of 6 years.

Holding.
No way they should have all those Okanogan and Chelan quality tags.

Holding my quality tags this year. 10 points for both. So not taking the chance of wasting points so im only putting in for one tag this year and points for the other.. They killed all the deer last year for quality.  :chuckle:

Used my quality points in 2014 so I applied this year figuring I won't draw.

Always a tough decision for a conscientious hunter. But I admit if I had the points, I'd be in the burns.

There are still some good units that weren't too impacted by the fires and winter kill.  I'm all in.

I am still undecided. I don't put in for ms deer or elk because I spend the majority of my time and money out of state. With that said, my toughest decision is what weapon to declare. Archery options are limited for quality deer and if drawn, it would still be a tough hunt with not great odds of killing a "quality" buck. If not drawn, at least I would still have the opportunity to kill a doe. If I went rifle, it would be opposite.  :o

Thought a bump might be appropriate, now that the submission period is over, any other voters out there?

If it was before the deadline I would be saying your crazy to apply with the success of last year and winter kill! Now that it's after the deadline, if I draw i will be in the burns!  :chuckle:

I can't ever seem to draw a quality deer tag so I just put in as normal.

What the ......

I thought the cutoff was the 28th!

Holding on. I have 8 points. My dad has 27... first year he's never put in

I need to change my vote but that's not an option. I ended up putting in as always. With my 4 points and my partner's 6, we're in with 5, for a first choice with 1 in 50 odds and a second choice with 1 in 25 odds.

Put in as usual, luckily my area saw little to no impact from fires. Possibly benefitting if any migrated out of fire areas into my area?

I would think deer would be moving into the burned areas.

As did I. 8 points should get it done. Tired of waiting for a east side tag. Blacktails are cooler than muleys anyway.

Burns are great places to hunt and still lots of nice bucks around. I'm all in with my 15 points

The topic of the fires and the high success rates last year were covered recently on The Outdoor Line ESPN radio show. Check out the podcast from May21st, specifically the "What's Cooking" segment:
