Title: I am the most successful hunter
Post by: WaltAlpine on May 01, 2016, 08:49:17 PM
I went farther East.
I called them. They gobbled back.
They came in.
They were 2 steps from me pulling the trigger. They saw the decoys and never came close enough.
I am not kidding I was closer than ever, more times than ever.
I have shot a turkey, but never in the Spring. And never have I seen so many birds, or heard more gobbles.
So I claim this as my success motto.

Awesome!!!!

I stopped using decoys a while back.  Some guys have good luck with them.  I have had more than one big gobbler spook when he saw the decoy.  I like my gobblers to have to search for the hen.

I have 5 awesome no kill stories from this weekend
Including seeing innumerable deer a bear, coyote and all kinds of birds.
It was the best failing weekend ever

Took me 5 years man. 5 seriously crazy, dissapointing, rewarding and intense years. When i sealed the deal on the opener this year it had me in tears. Keep that killer attitude and you will preservere!

:yeah: I quit using decoys almost 20 years ago, one season we killed 101 birds, I don't think any were with decoys! However, we used a real turkey fan (just the fan) this spring with good success. But, I will not be using any decoys that look fake!  :twocents:

I like it.

I have been so close so many times. It is like I don't want to kill one.
On the opener ,in a place where there was not suppose to be  turkeys to hunt. I called one in 30 feet away. Should have killed him.

I have been to every turkey hot spot in the state, lost track of the years.

But going again on the 14th. Turkey Camping. LOL

But success is not measured by the kill. You have to hunt for other reasons because the kill cannot sustain you alone.
I take great satisfaction in introducing new folks to hunting and hunting experiences. I would rather see my partner harvest than myself. Because most new guys need the harvest to sustain them.

Keep at it.

I was hunting with a friend who was with me on our first turkey hunt ever. about 2008 in the fall. We tagged out by 11 am that time. This was only our 2nd spring hunt.
He doesn't take it nearly as serous as I do but I only go without  him  if he can't go.
Next year I will be sure to be there on the 15th. Time isn't really an issue anymore so I'll be on it even more next year.

A friend of mine, the once head of the NWTF Rob Keck used to say, "it's the gobble, not the gobbler".  What he was alluding to was that just playing the game and experiencing the interaction of spring turkey hunting is success in itself.  You have been there and done that.  Eventually harvest will come.

Turkeys can be so stupid but so smart and or lucky all at one time.

I love a good decoy.  I have a light foam one with a great paint job.  I use hot glue to put on real tail feathers and have it in a more submissive posture.  I like them searching, but I also like something to distract them so I can move a bit.
