Title: what to do with problem hunters
Post by: shoot-em-dead on January 31, 2009, 06:27:35 PM: Today was my day, at least thats what I thought. I went out to Swansen lakes and found a valley that looked good so I parked the truck just to the edge where I couldn't see up the canyon. I started making my way in but with the snow I kept falling through so I knew I wasn't going in as far as I'd like. I saw a little bluff in the bottom with no snow on it so I made my way down there. I set up and waited about 15 min just glassing and letting things calm down and I spotted the first coyote coming into the draw about half a mile out. I watched him for a little and he was coming my way so I decided not to call yet. Then I spotted 2 more coming over the hill to my right that were a little closer but not much. Then I started a rabbit call as quiet as I could with my hand over the end for about 20 sec. I put the binos up and holy crap all three were heading my way. I waited about 3min and called again the same way. They were coming slow and cautious and about a half hour later they were within 750yds. Then I hear a car coming. :'( from where I was it made sense that I could here them come down the road but not leaving the way the terrain was. The coyotes turned and started walking away so I waited about 5min and started calling again. No good they just kept on going so I called louder,used a mouse squek, and then howled only to be left sitting there watching them leave. So I turn and start heading for the truck and there sits in the middle of the road the white explorer I heard come 30 ####ing minutes ago. >:( They left when they saw me but I huried back to the truck as quick as I could and put the pedal down after them. I got lucky and they were parked about 3 miles away. I came to a sliding stop and saw two guys standing about 150yds up the hill with no camo. I got out and let them have a peice of my mind.(temporarily forgot I'm a christian) They told me they couldn't see my truck that was parked right in front of them and they didn't hear me calling even though I was about 600yds away from where they parked. I thought about taking their plate # to the game dept. but figured that wouldn't do any good so I just left. Now that I vented, What would you have done.

In fact it sounds like you chewed on them for no reason. Public road, public land, they were not out following your tracks or hunting. I don't like the fact they were sitting beside your rig for 30 minutes. The fact they don't have camo on means absolutely nothing other then their chance of success in calling a coyote was greatly reduced. Sounds just like some bad luck. It happens when hunting public land with roads around. Sucks for sure, but I don't think you should have done what you did.

Post by: atomicjoe23 on January 31, 2009, 06:46:29 PM: Common courtesy calls for them to not even have stopped at your rig. . .when hunting on public land (especially in WA where there is a ton of it) if there is already a rig parked at a spot or at a gate then you keep moving onto the next spot so that what happened to shoot-em-dead doesn't happen. . .

. . .he may have over-reacted a little bit but if I had 3 dogs coming in to me and someone scared them off because they parked at my truck for 30 minutes I probably would have done the same thing. . .

. . .they either didn't know better or they were just rude. . .hopefully they will not do it again and this will serve to educate them as to proper hunting etiquette on public land. . .

Post by: jeepasaurusrex on January 31, 2009, 06:48:27 PM: If Im traveling to a new area to hunt, and I see someone already there, I keep going to make the smallest impact on their hunt as possible. If they are at their truck, I might stop and ask which way they are going so I do not go the same way. :dunno:

I agree with dbllunger also. How do you even know they were hunting? Lots of people just go for drives to look at wildlife too.

If we don't have coutesy among ourselves then what should we expect from those who don't partake in our sport or even are against it. I don't expect hikers to be quiet. They make noise for their safety, which is smart for their particular brand of recreation, the same way we need to exercise firearms safety, etc, but we all should be going out of our way not to disrupt each other. :twocents:

No, it's not illegal, but if they're hunters then I hope they just didn't know any better and will act differently next time.

I probably wouldn't have said anything, but I too may have temporarilly forget I am a christian.

There is no reason to get all puffed up and destroy your day over a couple of other guys out doing what they love to do. You gave up on your calling because you were more focused on your anger than calling coyotes.

Next time, wait'em out and stay put, you just might call in the other coyote that you didn't see on the first time sighting.

Just today, I heard two cars drive by my setup and I new coyotes were in the area because they were responding to my howls. I sat tight and waited for over a half hour to start calling again. When I did finally turn on the caller I was able to get a nice big male come in to within 35 yards of me. He scented me and trotted off, he never saw me and never ran away hard. When he got out to just a tad over 300 yards, I barked, he stopped and I poked him in the belly with a 6.8 round. He flinched, spun a couple of times then bolted south in a big hurry. I lost him but I wasn't too worried, there are plenty more coyotes but the most pleasant and suprising moment of the day was when I watched a nice Red Fox prancing around out about 450 yards from my stand. I wanted him to come in so bad but he wasn't having any part of it.

So for those of you that have never seen a Red Fox in eastern WA, I got news for ya, they are here just not in big numbers. It's the second one I've seen in three years on the east side.

Yep, it is in Whitman county. The first one I saw is now sitting on my neighbors T.V. Beautiful mount too. The one I saw on Sunday morning had more red in it. I watched it for a couple of minutes thru my 14X Leupold as it pranced around the sage. Maybe they are beginnig to infiltrate the area :dunno: My neighbor has lived here all his life and never saw a fox until he killed the one he has mounted up. I would really like to take this one before season is over.
