Title: Elk Property
Post by: kschadel on May 05, 2016, 02:56:36 PM: This year will be my 3rd year hunting and I have yet to find a good place to hunt elk on the West Side. My husband doesn't hunt, but most likely will be joining me in the woods this year. Does anyone know of open land or private property that has somewhat good promise on the West Side? No one in my family hunts and I'm struggling to grow in the sport as it can be so secretive. I would love to be able to fill my freezer for a year.

Any input would be wonderful. Thanks!

However, one great way to find elk is to get out there this time of year. Go spring bear hunting, etc... Mark a waypoint everywhere you see elk. Then get on a good topo map and you can usually figure out where they will move to come fall. ( Generally in the same drainage just deeper and higher.

Post by: OutHouse on May 05, 2016, 03:12:33 PM: Same as the other guy--- I don't hunt the west side. If you hunt archery I can tell you of some great spots in Eastern WA. The benefit of the archery season is that you can take a cow elk which really ups your chances.

Post by: JDHasty on May 05, 2016, 03:16:39 PM: If you volunteer to do elk hazing with WDFW... hint, hint you will know where they are causing problems. Same w/fence repair and in that case you will meet property owners... hint, hint, who may offer an invitation back during the season.

That would help people give input, also as asked above what is the weapon type?

Bear hunting is a great way to scout. If you are a rifle hunter drive around during archery seasons, you will get an idea where the hunters concentrate. They may even share info if they know you are hunting a different season.

I'm hunting the east side this year, so don't mind giving up some of my spots...

OutHouse: I most likely will be hunting archery after a year or so. I just took up archery in the off-season and can only pull 40 pounds, I would like to be at 50 or higher before I go after elk.

JDHasty: Excellent idea! Do you know how I would get connected with that?

b0bbyg: I'm in the middle of Canada and Oregon, but I'm definitely open to traveling for a good hunt.

Odell: As in David?! Hey bud! Already purchased for the West Side, but maybe next year.

JimmyHoffa: I haven't set a budget, but I'm not really one to pay for a hunt. I would rather get together with people that love and know the sport that are willing to share. I am willing to pay for day hunt permits to access land, but not open for something too expensive.

RadSav: Weapon of choice is generally a 30-06 Rifle or a shotgun with a slug.

I was digging through my phone looking for a good number to call and all I could come up with are a couple of people's personal numbers.... and I don't think they would appreciate that.

That's me. I forgot you were doing rifle. I don't know anything about rifle elk. I've done one Master Hunter cow hunt with a rifle and thats it. Next year you should join us for archery elk on the east side, its a blast.

Post by: Waycott15 on May 17, 2016, 09:05:42 PM: Also look at the stats on the harvest reports at the gmus that have good elk numbers. Call the biologists and wardens in those areas. They are a good wealth of knowledge. Otherwise, find public land in those areas and wear out some leather.

That would be awesome! The biggest thing I need to do is build strength to pull more. I can only pull 40 pounds, and would need to be able to do more to humanely get an elk. I'll work on it!!
