If I had to bet, I would put my money on the September dates. That said, both seasons will see good action and IMO your experience will depend more on how much the bulls have been pressured in the area your in as to how vocal they will be.

Are the elk even vocal in there with all the pressure they get?Not really, biggest culprit is people educating them way before season.

I haven't experienced bulls being very vocal anywhere in SW WA during archery, except in the middle of the night and very early morning. However, I have frequently experienced bulls coming in without a sound on a good call sequence and have been busted a few times when they tiptoe in. I called one in to my buddy a few years ago and the bull's little raghorn satellite returned a call but Mr. Big stayed silent the whole way in until he was 5 yards from my buddy's face. Then he screamed. :yike:

September should be good as long as people can keep from "pre- calling" in August and early September . A lot of times they stay quiet in the area due to being educated.

I'm pretty sure the topic of "pre-calling" has been discussed more than once and can be debated. If bulls are talking in august I don't see any problem with going out and locating with a bugle as part of scouting. Calling them in to archery shooting range preseason..... yeah I agree that is useless and pointless preseason and is one more card stacked against you that doesnt necessarily need to be. While I believe that yes "educating"/pressure preseason may have some slight effects, I believe there are other things that have more of a role in the downfall to an uneventful season. With bulls getting older every season and pressured/pursued 4-5 months out of the year is there something they are going to learn preseason that they didn't learn the season before? They don't get older by learning the same old tricks over and over.
I hunted the 506 last year with a multi season tag and had more vocal response in September, and from my experience during the muzzy season. They would respond to a locator bugle for the most part but nowhere near as frequent and a noticeably less aggressive response. Most cases they would respond but didn't care to come in any closer as most bulls already had a heard. Which is still a way better leg up on them than solely spotting or tracking. This was all from the 506, in a high pressure area, where a lot of bulls die. And if your looking for a primos video type of calling experience in this unit.....you may be slightly dissapointmented
