Hey fellas, looking to head over to Idaho for this coming September. Going into the Sawtooth range and have already been in touch withthe local biologists and studying maps hard. My hunting partner was there this weekend and found a few elk aroun. Still probably very early to find bigger groups. If any fellow members on here have been here and would be willing to share any info I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks

Which tag did you get? Archery or rifle?
-
If it's September it's archery.

Good point Jack.
Sawtooth is pretty good. Good success rates. Probably not a "big bull" unit but a lots of bulls unit...hopefully.
Out of curiosity when did you buy your tags?
-
What unit/s are you hunting? I just got back from a scouting trip over there last weekend.

To vague, the Sawtooth mountain range is pretty big. You need to give us at least what zone you're looking at hunting or better yet the specific units you're looking at. I hunt in the Pioneer zone but I'm still in the Sawtooth mountain range and I'm a ways away from the Sawtooth zone.

Any more info on this hunt I'm planning a trip to the pioneer zone next weekend any info would be appreciated.

I hunted this region few years back. Very steep and lots land to cover. You will need a horse or quad to get away from people. I went in as a solo hunter and hiked in as far as my supplies can take me but it was not enough to get away from the crowd. Saw lots of animals but no dice on shot opportunity on bigger bulls or buck. if you are willing to take a smaller deer or bull then you should fill you tag. Great country to explore and observe game through as spotter.

El Padron ain't scared!!
My sawtooth elk tag opens on Wednesday, so I'm leaving tomorrow...for a completely different unit...to hunt deer. Yep I'm a dummy.

I would do the same thing if I had an early deer tag. The elk woods in Idaho are busy over the holiday weekend but quite down for the week or two following it, then they get busy again for the last week and a half.
