Title: Free firewood!! MDF timber thinning project coming up. Looking for volunteers!!
Post by: jackelope on June 03, 2016, 11:29:53 AM
The Central WA Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation is planning a volunteer work party starting at 10 am, Saturday, June 11th.

To reduce the risk of wildfire, overstocked trees have been thinned on WDFW property along Morrison Canyon Road.  Volunteers will be stacking limbs from the downed trees in piles, and removing the logs, which would act as a fuel source.  Anyone who works for the day can take the cut logs home for firewood.  (Firewood removal is only permitted on that one day, and for volunteers who work on the project).

The project is located up Morrison Canyon Rd (same site as last year).  Get off I-90 at exit 93 near Elk Heights, and travel west on Morrison Canyon Rd until you hit the project site.

Volunteers should bring food/water, gloves, eye protection and boots.  Chainsaws are not necessary - trees will already be on the ground.

Everyone is invited, so pass the word to any friends or family that may be interested in joining in!

If you have questions, feel free to call me at 509-607-6747

Thanks,

Shana

I don't believe so but I sent a message to Dan to find out for sure. I'll update once I know for sure.

Do you know if the wood will be in firewood lengths or just in logs?

The only thing specifically I know is what's there. I got that email and copy and pasted it here. I'm assuming it will be log length and not all cut up.
Really don't know.
I sent another message to Dan to ask. Will update ASAP.

There is no pre sign up. Just show up ready to work. There will be a sign in sheet there.

Like Rainier10 said, feel free to call Shana with any questions also.

Logs will be cut to appx 6' length depending on the size of the tree.  We are aiming for a reasonable size to carry off the hill, but not take 10 trips moving the same amount of wood.  Folks can cut to length at home since everyone has a different size preference, and we don’t have the time to do that in the field. The idea was to reduce our liability for having volunteers run chainsaws on a project, and move a lot of wood quickly
