Seems like you are limiting yourself by only shooting out to 140.

Well then, if you're going east and can shoot tight groups at 140 - I hear Idaho and Montana have a few deer.

But in all reality 140 is realistic for a bow to shoot... Mainly for competition/target shooting....

I believe 200 meters has been considered to be in “bowshot” since the Battle of Agincourt.  You should try stretching your range.

I practice out to 100, most archery shoots have at least one shot in the 90-105 yard range.  I can tell you that if you can hit 100 yard consistently 30-40 is a slam dunk.  You can acquire the target quicker and get the shot off quicker at shorter distances after practicing long distance.

As for hunting deer over east there is a ton of information on here about bow hunting deer.  Is there something specific you want to know?  Your question could be answered a million different ways.

140. What's the yardage for a bow to start worrying about spin drift?

I can play along.
I think if you are good to 140 for deer you might want to do a little elk hunting as well.  They are bigger than deer so you ought to be able to stretch it out to 175 or 180 and still hit one.

At that yardage, it might bounce off an elk!

360fps I don't think so :)

My bow would explode if it could put out 360 fps!  As it is, I'd have to aim at about 45 degrees up from the target to get out to 140 yds and my sight ring would be about the length of the bow's lower arm.

I bet 50% of the people that say they dont take shots over 50yards r lying and take 90yards shots on mule deer all the time...lol
Title: Re: Deer hunting
Post by: tgray on June 09, 2016, 05:24:07 AM
:yeah:  No different than rifle hunters taking 4-5 and 600 yard shots when they only practice at the 100 yard range.

I also wouldn't be considering shooting a bow at a 140 yards either.  But I would say that most of the animals on my wall would say otherwise just sayin.

You crack me up!  Hard to forget that 90 yard shot Bildo took that center-punched that big buck's chest last year.    He caught a raft of crap for taking that shot, but ultimately, he was completely resolute in his abilities.   (I couldn't find his thread but his 2015 success photo was posted on 07 Sept. last year).

To each his own, I say.

Good thread Dale.  Didn't learn anything about your original question, did you?  Whether you were baiting the boys, just looking for some summertime fun by generating a discussion about the ethics of long distance shooting in bow hunting, or completely serious in your entire discussion, you've given us something to laugh (or cry) about.  Perhaps you should start a new thread if you have real questions - otherwise, just keep throwing kindling on the fire.  83 days till the archery opener.............
