Title: incentive permit
Post by: ridgefire on June 09, 2016, 06:12:23 PM
I got a voicemail from wdfg saying that i drew a incentive permit for doing my license stuff in time. I can choose a western elk tag or a deer tag. What are these permits and are they worth claiming? I always apply for eastside archery elk and not sure if i drew anything yet. Will this tag affect my eastside hunt? It would def be for elk.

It's a poor mans governor tag. Jump on that Elk tag!

Claim it! It's like a raffle tag for free! You hunt Sept 1-Dec31 virtually on your terms. You just have to hunt in compliance with any general season that happens to be going while your hunting. Outside of general seasons you can hunt on your terms with your choice of weapon. Congrats!

You really don't want it.....give fish and game a call and see if you can't transfer it to someone else...il take the short straw and take it off your hands  :chuckle:

It's like a multiseason, special permit, raffle and general mutant tag.  Claim the elk.  I thought they usually notify people a bit earlier for that one (like April).

There are 2 Eastside elk, 2 Westside elk and 5 statewide deer tags available for the incentive permit. I'm guessing since you have a choice there are probably some others who will get notified for the remainder of the tags.

I want a call!  That tag would be one of the best in state.

I'm super excited for the tag. Looks like it's one additional elk for me this year. Already called and left a message saying I will take the Westside elk tag. Now the question is what unit should I start researching? I have always hunted eastside archery. Any tips on a unit to start researching?

Nook sack, white river, Norway pass. Some great quality opportunities that many only dream of.

I got a call saying i could choose between any deer tag in the state or Westside elk tag. I am thinking the elk tag but wondering if I should consider a deer tag. I am def much more of a elk hunter than a deer hunter. Should I consider the deer tag?

Tough choice! Since the draw results will likely be out in the morning maybe you should wait until then to choose. Draw your bull tag, take the deer incentive, no draw you're still hunting bulls. It's hard not to hate you!  :chuckle: Enjoy!

I'm all about the muleys, but I'd personally without a doubt, take the westside bull tag. Never a better chance to bag a book roosey. :twocents:

The thought never even crossed my mind.  I can buy a tag in multiple western states and chase bugling bulls, many of which have better trophy potential.  Not very often you can hunt the whole month of November basically, in Washingtons premier units.  180-200" is a very doable thing with that tag. :twocents:

I will say though, to me, an elk is an elk.  Don't care if its rocky or rosie, or any other sub species, so for a rosie guy, this would be a great opportunity

Good thought.....   but when else could you chase Roosevelt bulls during the rut with your rifle?

You can always chase Muley bucks during the rut with your rifle in Montana.

I wish I had this terrible choice to make.......

No kidding right! :chuckle:

Its true you can hunt otc in places like Montana, but montana doesn't have even close to the top end trophy potential as North Central Washington.  But like I said before, I'm not a rosie guy :sry:

For $3500 I can hunt muleys DIY on public land well into the 180"s range up to 200"+ with some luck. I don't know anywhere I can even hunt rooseys with a rifle during the rut, let alone in nearly every gmu. :dunno:

I have til the 14th to decide. My love is chasing Rocky Mt elk in Idaho duringduring the rut with my bow but also love hunting mulies with my rifle or bow. I have never hunted rosies but am gonna have a hard time passing up the tag. Hopefully I draw a 328 archery tag for elk. Might make my decision easier.
Title: Re: incentive permit
Post by: bobcat on June 09, 2016, 08:36:25 PM
I'd have to go with the deer tag. There aren't many places left to hunt elk on the west side anymore, and most areas they have hoof rot. I just feel the deer tag would give you a much better opportunity and a more enjoyable hunt.

What are the best west side elk tags besides the nooksack? Looks like I may have to make a call to fish and game to see if muzzleloaders are ok.
Title: Re: incentive permit
Post by: buckmaster_wa on June 09, 2016, 08:49:00 PM
I don't know the west side at all so I would choose the deer tag. However, I think it's much more difficult to find and kill a 180" deer in North central Wa than people think it is. Don't get me wrong, they are around. But they are not everywhere. I have had the luxury of getting to assist guys the last 2 seasons on tags up north and both times it was a blast, tons of bucks spotted but very few that would even break the 160" mark.

It would be a much easier choice if the Eastside elk tag were an option.

No brainer is the elk. Granted as mentioned before there are other states that offer otc rut hunts but you better be prepared logistically. I have been there done that many many years. Nothing easy about it if you are chasing quality bulls. I am assuming you are using a rifle as well.
The mule deer hunt in November will be a lot of driving around the  winter range looking up the hill out your truck for that true 180+ buck. However,  it is attainable but not as thrilling as a big bull screening in your face.
Good luck,  you will definitely have fun.

Agreed.  Kind of like 400" bulls in the Colockum or the blues :chuckle:

Nooksack should be your only choice. A chance for something real special up there.

That being said I would have chosen the deer tag for a chance to hunt a giant Eastside Muley over a westside elk.

Every one seems to overlook that it would let him hunt the first week of November as well for a good chance at a book blacktail before he headed east. Moot point now.

Good luck on the elk tag.

I'd have to take the deer tag because BLRMan would hurt me if I didn't over a Westside elk tag.  If that's eastside elk I can handle BLRman's tears.

If they offered you the east side elk it would be a no brainer!!!  I would take the deer tag for sure!  The places for hunting big muleys in the rut are great!  A trophy mule deer is now more harder to get than a trophy elk.  If you do any homework and scouting you could end up easily with a 180 class muley or better.  You could hunt Desert or Entiat during the rut.  If you really do your homework you could kill even a bigger buck in areas outside of those but Im not willing to give up all of my secrets.  Im jealous to say the least!!!!  Good luck!!!!!

I'm likely wrong (getting old) but I seem to remember that those with incentive tags could hunt only with the weapon of the season that was open. :dunno:

Of course there are times when nothing is open and the incentive tag holder could use any weapon of choice, but I've been under the impression that the incentive tag holder could hunt during archery season elk, but would have to use archery gear, same with muzzy season, not quite the same as the raffle/auction tags, same with deer, am I mistaken? :dunno:

Best time to hunt elk would be between archery and early muzzleloader.

Can you hunt elk in the Kapowsin Tree Farm if you have a Hancock permit? If so, I would go elk and go kill a monster westside bull. If not then I would go chase big muleys around in November.

Be sure to read the rules that go along with it, I believe you have to use the weapon of the time for the unit you are in, there are very few rifle hunts in Sept.

Congrats to your son, you two have a blast!  The following is just for fun ....

I say get a disabled hunter permit and take the elk incentive permit.  September 1 drive over to Ellensburg, get the WDFW employee directory, and just call and record until you get someone to say yes you can kill a branched bull on the Colockum from your truck with those permits.  Roadhunt a big bull before the seasons, and if anyone gives you guff tell them those permits make it your U&A area and you are exercising your rights.

Congrats on the tag for your son
I also drawn the same tag
Had choice between deer and west side
Elk
Tough decision on what tag to pick
I have taken a big bull 7x7
Still waiting for my big deer after 40+
Years
Not that I haven't gotten nice deer
Just not my wall mount yet
Have been just a meat hunter
Can't eat the horns anyway
For me choice was for the deer
I had drawn multiseason elk tag
Also drawn cow tag and second deer
Along with my dad's cow tag and second deer
It's Going to be a busy season  :IBCOOL:
