Title: Who shoots Berger VLD Hunting bullets
Post by: BIGBULLBALLS on February 03, 2009, 04:07:08 PM
I just wanted to find out who hunts with Berger VLD hunting bullets.  I have hand loaded some for my 270 wsm and they are tack drivers but I am curious what they do on big game.  Any info would be great.

Are they bonded or anything? Going to fly apart like a ballistic tip at close range?

They perform almost exactly like a Ballistic Tip... which is perfect on deer. I've been shooting them in the .25-06 for a while now... I think they're the best bullet available in that caliber. You won't find a bullet that arrives down range with more energy than one of the heavy Bergers... and the decrease in wind drift is awesome.

I haven't shot any but some of my buddies do with great results.
Saw a big mulie buck that was shot by one hell of a rifleman shooting a custom 300 UM with a 185 VLD.  One shot through the shoulder at 752 yds on the rangfinder.  Bullet performance was great.  I agree with the above quote.

What grain VLD bullet are you using for the 270wsm? Also would you share your load information?

I am actively working up a load for the 140 VLD Hunting bullet.  A load I found which is great is 60gr IMR 4350 and WLRM primers.  I am shooting .5" 5 shot groups but I have alot of powder fouling and the bullet speed is not what I want (only 2930fps).  I am going to try some new loads with H4831 and re-19.  Go to Best of the West web site and read through their forum and you should find some great info on this bullet.  One thing I have read is bullet seating depth is important with this bullet.  I am now seating my bullets with a COL of 2.860 which is .015 off the lands.  Berger Bullets says to seat the bullet on the lands but when loaded they wont fit in my clip.  Hope this helps

I have heard Accurate Arm Mag Pro powder is the one powder you get the velosity in the 270wsm. I have some 150gr. VLD's that I will be loading soon with Mag Pro. I tried IMR 7828sc and got some decent groups.
