Title: wow, glad they are opening another day, another week day
Post by: trophyelk6x6 on June 17, 2016, 06:33:31 PM
Halibut fishing will re-open June 23 in marine areas 3 and 4
Action:  Recreational halibut fishing in Marine Area 3 (La Push) and Marine Area 4 (Neah Bay) will re-open for one additional fishing day on Thursday, June 23, 2016. Catch through Saturday (June 11) was 95,146 pounds, leaving 12,884 pounds of quota remaining. That is sufficient for another weekday of fishing, but not another weekend day of fishing.
Effective date: June 23, 2016.
Species affected: Pacific halibut.
Location:  Marine areas 3 and 4.
Reason for action:   There is sufficient quota remaining in marine areas 3 and 4 to open the recreational halibut fishery for another day. This rule conforms to federal action taken by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the International Pacific Halibut Commission.

So can some one please tell me why when they do a one day opener on a Thursday based on a quoted still available (based on spotty fish counters?) Now I understand some people may have a regular day off on a Thursday but why not a Saturday when 80% of the population along with their families are available to fish?

The last extra day they added was on a Saturday but the weather deteriorated through the week. That probably  cut down participation significantly and created this opportunity. I know I was gonna go for it but we and a couple others I know cancelled due to the wind/sea forecast. There probably isn't quite enough quota left to have a big fishing day. If they ended up going over the quota then we would be penalized next year and have another reason to despise WDFW's management practices.

Well thanks for the response and it makes sense.  I fish Canada also and just to know outside Sooke and Renfro their season is months long with only 15 miles difference just pisses me off for my brothers here in Washington.  Not to mention how the Canadians smoke our Coho, and we don't get to smoke their Frazier River sockeye. All these fish go down the strait and I feel like we short Washington's fishermen.
