Title: Idaho Whitetails-Potlatch Land
Post by: Harbor_hunter on June 24, 2016, 04:32:45 PM
Hello all,

My father and I are looking to hunt Idaho during Thanksgiving week this coming season. This will be our first time hunting whitetails over there and we are excited to give it a try.  We are looking at hunting the Dworshak Reservoir/Headquarters area.   I was curious if anyone had any experience hunting the Potlatch land in that area. Their permits look like a reasonable cost.  Hoping there are some gated roads that do not allow motor vehicles.  I am sure there are plenty of hunters scattered around in that area.  Not looking for any gimme's, but just curious about Potlatch land and about any experiences over there. Thanks!

lots of land but also lots of hunters, almost all the gated roads have 4 wheeler trails around them, but most of the people that hunt there dont walk much or walk off of a road much. there are people that ofcourse have places they hunt there that are very good but for the most part it gets alot of activity and hunting wont be anything special.

Thanks for the replies guys.  Yeah after looking at harvest reports, it definitely shows a lot of people are hunting in there.  Even if there are a lot of people though, that doesnt mean they are getting far from their quad.   A lot of ground around there for sure.  I am sure the first year will be a learning experience.

if that is the best place you can find in central idaho or have another reason to hunt there( family living there, ect) then definately go. It is still idaho and you can still kill a buck if you have any knowledge of whitetail in a high pressure area. I hunt alot of high pressure public land places here and there is the number of deer to still be successful.

Lots of lazy road hunters, but that time of your road hunting is probably the way to do it.  It will be cold as heck and a monster buck could step out at any time.

Yeah we don't really have a lead on anywhere special in central Idaho.  Just seems like there is a lot of ground to hunt there just thought it would be a good unit and area to try.  We're not really in it for big bucks, just some meat and a good time.

I mean every piece of ground that can be hunted by the public is busy as all hell.  Some more then others but busy as hell either way.

Its as if people on hunting forums seem to think everyone has the option to hunt a private farm or pay 5k to an outfitter. Most of us can't and don't.
