Title: Roadtrip
Post by: metlhead on July 10, 2016, 03:06:37 PM
So I gots the itch for some good bird shooting and decided late Oct of '17 I will be headed east. Gonna spend nine days, just my dog and I, pulling the travel trailer, chasing roosters and sharpies. I have set my sights for NE Montana for a number of reasons. I don't want to hassle with landowners anymore. I just wanna roam ffth lands and see birds, parking overnight where I can. Just might even pick up someone willing to enjoy the time and share some cost. Anyone here have any advice they would care to share, especially if you have done it or hunt the area. Growing up, I spent every fall shooting bids in Nebraska and Yakima, so the hunting part is covered.

I might want to go with you if I retire by then. I have a Britt that still needs a bit of work. Her first season was last year. Hunted birds around Jordan and Circle a few times and by my friends place in Brusett but that was back in 2010.

This year will be number 2 for my wirehair. His first was stellar for a puppy. He really needs to stretch out his legs on some CRP. I have long since given up on pheasant in Washington, having seen the good days of the early '80s pass, and spend my time with my favorite bird, quail. The covers are tight and I feel he is held back from really moving out smartly like he wants.

How far NE are you going? I will be over there from mid Oct thru late Nov. PM if you want.

The moment I find open space with some birds around. NE just seems to be the general quarter of the state the has had a better outlook.

This is true, that's why I carry MT and ND licenses in my pocket while hunting over there.

We found lots of sharpies last September just east of Havre.  Lots of Block Management land.  Really nice ranchers.

yeah but if your gonna make a trip of it you might as well see some of the most beautiful country I guy can see, the grasslands the Theodore Roosevelt park is unreal, makes a guy want to get on a horse and ride into the sunset and then just on the other side of that are ringnecks by the gazillions, if that's even a number :chuckle:
