Title: 35 Whelen
Post by: finnman on July 11, 2016, 01:17:52 PM
Hi,
I am a fan of the 35's, I own a .358 Win and a .350 Rem Mag. I just found out that a co-worker inherited a load of guns and wants to sell a Remington model 700 35 Whelen. I will plan to look at it tomorrow and make the decision.
I reload, so which loads have you found to be accurate and which bullets have you gone with for game?

I will post a pic if I buy it!

Thanks!

Depends on what size bullets you want to shoot in it.   Have had good luck with IMR-3031 with 250's.  Varget/RL-15 is a go to for smaller bullets... 200's and 225's.   Really it is about the same (power wise) as 350 Rem mag, except on 06 length brass.  Awesome elk gun.

I am shooting 200 grain Hornady bullets in the .358 win and 250 grain Nosler and A-Frame in the 350 RM. So I was thinking 225's in the Whelen.

RL-15 is the best powder that I've found.  250g Hornady RN have taken 2 elk for me, the last was 425 yards - didn't take a step.

200g Remington CL is also very accurate.

180g Hornady XTP makes a nice plinker load.

I like 4064. 250 grain interlocks.
Seems like the 35 Whelen is a cartridge that really doesn't need super premium bullets.  225 Speers are great too.
The 35's are pretty accurate,  good s.d. .
Guy I bought it from slew several browns and Grizz with his and even loaned it to a native to kill a polar bear. Plain Jane bullets were all he ever used. Perfect balance of speed, weight, diameter.  It kills way better in real life than the charts say.

Some of the m 700 ' s don't have fast enough twist for the heavy stuff.  It was originally,  the Colonel, meant for heavier bullets. When Big Green legitimized it, it was being sold as a big brush buster for WTS hunters back east and they pressed the 200 and 225 loads.  I've got on order some woodliegh 310 gainers coming. Those should be fun.

The 35 Whelen is a terrible round, you should pass on buying it.

He sent me some pics. It is the same exact rifle as my 350 Rem Mag. Its the 700 Classic. All original, excellent condition, has open sights with hood. It has a 3x9-40 Bausch&Lomb Elite 3000 scope. Leather shoulder sling.

I offered him $600. We shall see???? :dunno:

I agree with the person who posted above.  Non-premium bullets work just fine.  Speer Hot cores work great.  Corelokts also do well.  Partitions while not needed, do open up really well.  Overall it is just a good all around gun.

I picked up the 35 Whelen today! It had a few wear marks and the scope had a scratch on it, not a big deal. I gave him $500 for it.
Now its time to work up a load!!! Thinking either 200 or 225 grain bullet, perhaps Accubonds or Sierra boat tails soft points for deer.

That Sierra 225 BT is as good a bullet for bear or elk as you could ask for. One of the plusses of over 30 caliber non mags. They travel at reasonable velocities and deliver killer payloads with blowing bullets to bits.
