Guys had a big velvet bull in the back of their truck this morning next to the big field on the left outside of town going towards Buckley with a cop behind them pulled over. Anyone know anything about this? Road kill or poached? I don't see any blood in the road

Interesting

Just saw this on Facebook. Was shared to one of the local hunting groups.

Damn that sucks!

Salvage permit?
-
You don't think a bunch of toothless hillbillys will take their beat up delapitated trucks out run over deer and elk on purpose do ya :dunno: will they keep track of the ones who get salvage permits? Cause I am betting if you 20 salvage permits something hinky is probably up??

Cool thanks for the info man! Just seems odd to me that big bull was in the road usually the elk stay in the tree line or just inside the field I never see them as far out as this and let alone a big bull they are wiser.

The guy today had the rack with the animal in the back of the truck.

A couple families back in Wisconsin did just that... I was in a vehicle that had hit a deer and the first vehicle to pull up to us were two brothers in a beater truck with a brush guard. They asked for the deer we hit (seriously mangled up) and told us they trying to find a deer to hit. Family was pretty poor. I think they poached a little when they could. Nobody minded though.

Pics and story are on Facebook

Haha! Turns out I know the guy who picked up the bull.

Not to be a dueche waffle but, really, someone is actually gonna pose up with a bull they just creamed with their rig? Sorry but that's a classless act for sure..
-
They guy posing didn't hit it.

Did you read the post he made before assuming things?
-
Glad they salvaged some meat. I do see this as a way for poachers to abuse the system though I hope it doesn't play out as so.
-
Been this way in Idaho. Never heard of anyone abusing the system. Really if I was going to poach it would be so much easier to shoot one behind the house than to try to hit it with my rig. I think it is a great law. :twocents:
-
:yeah:
-
I don't get what's classless about it.
Glad they got to salvage it.

The potential n for abuse is high in my opinion, especially in an area like packwood.
-
:yeah:
Packwood should sell tags for that with options of
Chevy
Ford
Dodge
They would make a fortune.
I know the guys that salvaged it glad to see there freezer full great people and will give you the shirt off there back in a heart beat.
-
There are other places where salvaging roadkill is legal (Colorado for one) that have herds as good as the Packwood area and I have not heard of the abuse so many worry about. There are a lot more people on the roads to see than in the woods.
Also how many of you have hit an elk? Even with a good brush guard there is likely to be some serious damage that would outweigh the meat gained.
I just don't think it is going to be the issue so many think.
-

The state will probably make them a new special draw category. Antlerless, antlered, and quality for the really big ones

I thought the original law did not allow the retention of the horns. I could be wrong. Doesn't matter either way as long as they are consistent.

I agree, not necessarily about Packwood though. Other states seem to have more accountability in that an LEO has to tag it before it can be taken home.
-
People die hitting animals all the time. There is s memorial in front of my dad's house in Mazama from where someone hit a little doe whitetail. Quite the risk to abuse the system in my opinion.
-

This will probably become an issue ! :dunno:

Probably because they swerved to try to miss it. A pickup with a heavy duty bumper, accelerating straight at a deer, nobodys gonna die. I highly doubt it would be a widespread practice, but I could see it happening, i guess some clown was running over turkeys around here to pick them up. Anyway, i highly doubt anybody would hit an elk on purpose. Maybe deer, but definitely not elk.
-
It seems to me that at any "trophy" road kill salvage it would be wise to have a LEO come just to support the idea that everything is on the up and up.
-
I remember a cop hitting an elk near Packwood awhile back. He and the elk both died. If you want to hit a critter you better be willing to pay the price.
-
That's rich :chuckle:
-
My f350 is way too nice to intentionally hit something. But glad they were able to salvage even if they werent the original party who hit it. Might be a situation where the individual is a vegetarian or isnt skilled too. No sense still letting it go to waste. Anyone should be able to salvage provided original person doesnt want it. Last year I seen a huge doe get hit... driver slowed down a lil but just kept driving. Doe stumbled 15yrds then expired. Was sooo tempted to salvage but didnt cause was driving work truck with huge company logo :bash: Glad WA State finally did something right for us meat eaters.

Sorry I wasn't referencing your post but an earlier one(took me a few hours before I hit post) about the potential for abuse...
My mom lives in Packwood and taught in Randle so I know it's a dangerous area for collisions.

Maybe but the damage to the vehicle could easily exceed the cost of a license. Even a broken headlight can easily cost over $50.
-
Any poacher worth his buckshot mudders knows a 243 she'll is way cheaper than a new 2200 dollar yota.
-
That's whyeople will use their hillbilly trucks with the big steel bumpers and what not!! Hey I think it's a great law, it sucks to see animals waisting away, but it WILL get abused that I can promise, especially during the blacktail rut!!
-
Really ? I can see it maybe be abused by one ore two animals a year. I think that the benefits far out weigh the abuse. Just my opinion.
-
Doesnt look like a 6pt to me :dunno:

Idk I was driving by it at 50 and both antlers were kind of next to each other so I couldn't count points! Thought I saw 6 though

:yeah: Lot's of worry over nothing IMO. Certainly hasn't been a big problem in North Idaho, and if there is ever an area with possible suspects :hello:

This is one of those new laws they actually got right. Abuse? Maybe. There's always a loop hole some knuckle dragger will try take advantage of, but the least we can do is salvage these animals. To think otherwise is a mistake. Too many go wasted, it's about time this state caught up with others and allow honest folk to make the most of a bad situation.

You really think said hillbillies needed this law to "salvage" all those B&C blacktails they were running down with their hillbilly trucks?

That building does not look familiar, guess I need to go for a drive.

I'll probly be getting 20 permits this winter on my drive to work....I saw atleast that many last winter....except it will be obvious I didn't hit them with my truck
-
Got $6000 in repair and rental on our Forester that hit a deer. I'll be buying a beef before I try to hit a deer or elk.

Hit a cow elk on I-90 a few years back just west of Easton. Going 70+ mph in a stock '97 F-250 4x4 (thank goodness!) Over $15k in damage, truck totaled! I was unharmed but if I had been in the yota I used to drive or a sedan....
-
Was watching the show alaska state troopers a while ago and saw a small Toyota sedan that hit a cow moose. Took the top straight off.
-
Found that building in the pic.. good thing she didn't hit the bigger bull
-
Knowing this state's greed, once they see people applying for this permit, they'll start charging for it! Hell, I wouldn't surprised to see a "modern vehicle" tag being sold if this really becomes popular!
