Title: American River
Post by: jcamp86 on July 18, 2016, 05:26:39 PM
Has anybody fished out there off of 410 before?  Heading out to Hells Crossing Campground next month with the wife over our anniversary weekend, and she's wanting to try out fishing.  It's been years since I have been fishing and feel like a noob all over again.  I will be going after trout.  I don't even know where to begin my setup with my spincast setup.

Make sure you read the regs on the American very well so you don't get a ticket. River mile 5.4-15.8 is basically from hell crossing on up.

Its been a long time since I have been in that area but from what I remember the American wasnt great fishing.  I would drive down 410 and hit the Naches.

I saw regs from years past it was closed there,  but i didnt see anything about closures this year.  I appreciate the heads up.

It appears this is still current with nothing listed as closed in the 2016 regs?

That is in reference to the section below RM 5.4 and the section above RM 15.8. There was an emergency closure last year due to high water temps. The Emergency change you posted is the one that lifted the earlier emergency closure, returning it to the permanent regs.

It's been closed as long as I remember during the times that I have listed. Nothing's changed. Look in the pamphlet on page 48.

It's closed every summer during that time to protect spawning salmon.

I missed that.  Thank you for potentially saving my skin!   I will have to make a short drive to try and find the fish.

From where you're camping you could drive up the PCT, then hike to Dewey Lake to the S., Sheep Lake to the N. Sheep Lake is the much easier hike, both lakes have a bunch of smallish brookies that you almost can't fail to catch.  If you're in pretty decent shape, try Deadwood Lakes off the PCT north-abandoned trail goes over the first gap on the PCT N. of Chinook Pass..it's really pretty easy to see where it breaks off the PCT about a half mile in if that.  Both lakes have decent rainbows and you'll probably be pretty lonely. Not so with Dewey and Sheep.

Thanks for the info Dslayer.  I will definitely check at least one of those out.
