Weyerhaeuser bought all the Longview Timber lands and they require a purchased permit. Its $50 for the walk in.Campbell group and Hancock are still free access walk in only. There is a lot of Weyerhaeuser pieces in behind the Campbell Group and Hancock gates so it gets a little confusing at times.

The fossel creek was $420 this season and the weyerhaeuser was $270 both sold out in a few days. I have the rayonier/fossel creek permit. This will b the 3rd season i got it. The price keeps going up each year.

I've hunted west valley but its been a few years. I thought it was hancock land....but that could have changed.

It is a mix of Cathlamet timber, Hancock investment group, and possibly Sierra Pacific (All open to free access-walk in behind gates). Property is fairly cut up and boundaries can be difficult. The area can be accessed from West Valley rd, Brookfield (top south side KM mntn) along with gates along loop rd and eden valley. There is not enough Rayonier or Weyerhaeser property in that area to warrant purchasing any permits.

Hwy 12 isn't anywhere close to there, sure you don't mean SR 4???

Tons of elk all thru there, they used to transplant elk from the refuge in there, don't know if they still do though. Park at a gate and head on in. There has been a lot of commercial thinning done in there and the elk love it.

Fossil creek/grays river area in general when compared to the size of this unit is only a small portion of it. Fossil creek area (referring to rayonier timber access area) is more than enough ground for a person to spend plenty of time hunting in. I've had the permit and it was plenty of ground for me to spend all early and late season archery in. There's a lot more to this unit. And even I have a lot of ground to learn in comparison to many I've talked to over the years of hunting it. With every timber company going the way of pay to play even I am getting worried about finding free access timberland. Pushing me more towards hunoting out of state.

Fossil creek seems like plenty of land too me. In addition I have a guy in my hunting group that is in better shape then 99.9% of humans in the U.S. and he hasn't came close to covering all of fossil creek...how did you do it? PS me if u don't want to tell everone your secret.

Post by: olesmokey on August 23, 2016, 02:33:26 PM: I would agree with shadowless_nite regarding Fossil Cr/Rayonier area as fairly small in comparison to the Willapa hills (506) unit as a whole. It is however plenty of land to consume ones time during a season or for that matter a lifetime. Unfortunately the hayday of that area has since past due to lack of road closure and remoteness.
