Can't remember if I posted this on HuntWA or not?
Saw this over on another forum and asked the author if I could share it. Looks like something that may be worth a try. Terry sais with this method, the loins come out completely whole and you just delicately trim them off the back bone. Basically, after quarters and straps are removed, you saw down through the spine and that section just peels off with tenders attached. RJ

You're talking about backstraps Macs B, I'm referring to the loins (under the rear of spine, towards the very back of the animal). I do my straps pretty much the same way you do.

Seems like a lot of work for a chore that takes roughly 60 seconds are requires zero sawing :dunno:
Press the gut sack (gutless method) back with the back of your hand, while pulling on the loin, and with your other hand, cut it out. Literally 60 seconds. I can't even remember the last time I carried a saw in my pack.
Always cool to see a different way of doing something though. Thank you for sharing :tup:

Tenderloins are tenderloins.

Pretty cool technique. Not to thread jack but how do you guys that don't like to pack a saw her the antlers out? Do you just leave the head whole, that's heavier than a saw isn't it?. PS, I don't like to pack a saw either, last year I just picked it up on one of the trips out with meat. Lookin to see what others are doing.

No saw here. Carry out the caped skull and antlers. It's heavier on one trip out than carrying a saw everywhere, plus you don't need a saw. You can break a deer or elk down with a pocket knife if you wanted to and knew how to separate the joints.

I do European mounts on all my critters, so I skin the skull off and down the mountain I go. Even if I plan on doing a shoulder mount, I'm still gonna skin off the head and leave the jaw, tongue, eye balls, and other head trim on the mountain. As Jackalope said, all a guy needs is a pocket knife. I do everything with a havalon.

This is how we've done the last few critters while doing gutless....obviously it can be done with out a saw but it sure comes in handy.....I'm sick of doing euro mtns.....so no more heads coming out for this guy unless it's a dandy
