Just curious what you West side guys are using for black tail? Rifle model and caliber?
-
Well I have never hunted blacktail or the west side but I always thought a rem model 7 in .358 Winchester would be a great combo
-
Kimber mountain ascent .308, nosler accubonds 165 grain bullet, leupold vx-3 3.5-10 power. Kind of wish I had a 4.5-14 though.
-
I've killed blacktail with .243, .270, .300 win-mag and .300RUM, all in Rem 700 rifles. I'd say pick whatever caliber you like and use it. With that said, I'd love to add a .257 Wby to my safe.
-
.30-06 in a 700
-
Tikka T-3 lite in .270 WSM
-
I use one or two calibers and they are 240 wby or a 257 wby, my girlfriend uses a 7mm-08
-
257 Roberts or my grandpa's old 30-30 depending on how and where I'm hunting that day.
-

copy that 358 win...just bought a new BLR in 358--took it out last week to see where it shot with the open sights..at 100 yards the first shot was 2" high with 200 gr hornady accubonds..ready to whack-em and stack-em
-
Two pre 64 m70's. One a 30'06, the other a 35 Whelen.
-
Remington 7400 I got from a member on here a few years back.
I added a Leupold 3-9 to it, and shoot Remington green & yellow box .30/06 180 grainers through it.
-
Savage lightweight in 260 remington.
-
savage lightweight in 243 winchester
-
I use several calibers but lately it's been my .257 Wby mag

My favorite has always been the 270 Win.
-
I've always used a .243 till I got a smoking deal on my weatherby 30-06 and both work great
-
I'm planning to use this '53 model 70 featherweight 308 with 150g's.

Nice nice. Love my old Winchesters.

Ruger All Weather M77 Mk. II. 308 Win. 3.5-10x, 165 Partitions or Accobonds, or Remington 700 Mountain Rifle .270 Win. 3-9, 150 Partitions or Accubonds, Marlin 1895 GS, 45-70, 300 jhp.
-
Ithaca Deerslayer II - 12ga w/Lightfield Hybrid Elites. Scoped
Ithaca UltraFeatherweight Deerslayer Rifled - 12 Ga w/Lightfield HE reduced recoil
Ithaca Deerslayer Smooth - 12 Ga w/whatever Foster patterns well or Brennekes. Scoped
Smith 629 Magna Classic w 240 Noslers over H110
Diamond Carbon Cure w/Slick Tricks
Excalibur w/Bolt Cutters
If I hunt w/rifle I just grab my mod 70 300 Wby. But I don't hunt BT with rifle much.
It depends on where I am hunting. Revolver if a buck comes in from behind my right shoulder when I am in a stand and getting a shotgun lined up is a problem. I rarely use my smooth Deerslayer, but loan it a lot.
-
I plan on using my sig sauer m716
-
Browning A bolt.338 Winchester mag that I bought in 1988 or last 5 years Tikka T3 .338 Winchester mag. Started in 1967 with a model 70 .270 Winchester.
-
H&R handy rifle 45-70 405gr SP and a Millet red dot scope.
-
mtnwkr,that is one sweet rig!
-
Savage 7mm - 08, Savage 20 gauge slug, Marlin 336 30-30, and the Rem. 30 - 06 which will likely never see the light of day again.
-
Determined to kill a 4 point or better this year with my .357 mag Python! I have a multi season permit as back up. :chuckle:
-
7mm rem. mag. 160gr. Accubonds

Ruger All Weather M77 Mk. II. 260 Rem. She is the bees knees!
-
Marlin MR-7 30.06 180g
The rifle hasn't disappointed me yet, but I've let it down a few times.
-
I echo what JakeLand posted. Same gun and caliber for both me and my wife.
-
300BLK for the thick stuff 300WM for longer work.
-
I'd say we're looking at about as wide a variety of guns and calibers possible, which is about what I'd expect.
My favorite is my dads old Savage 99 in 308, just because.
-
I tried many rifles and calibers over the years, and everything works fine.
But I found perfect fit for wet side 12ga/30-06 combination rifle with 1-4x24 30mm tube
-
.35 Rem. Marlin LA or 99 Savage in .308
-
THIS ONE, BECAUSE IF YOU HIT THE DEER DEAD CENTER CHEST IT WILL BE GUTTED AUTOMATICALLY. :bfg:

Anything legal to hunt with will do the job. Blacktail are hardly armor plated. I shot a fork-horn in '09 with my CZ-550 6.5x55mm. I used 140gr Hornady SP's. That was a bit much for a 40 yard shot. Second shot shattered both front legs. First was a double lung hit that missed bones going in and out. It was a fatal wound, but not enough expansion to knock it down quickly, hence the second shot. Though after that second shot the deer ran on it's hind legs far enough to tumble down a hill and require about 10 minutes of looking to find. If I were going to consistently hunt blacktails with that gun I'd probably step down to 120gr bullets, and probably go with something that isn't as tough like a Hornady SST to get more energy dumped in the vitals.
-
I use anything from .243 to .416 depending on terrain and visibility.
-
A 20 gauge with rifled barrel and scope since I hunt in a firearm restricted county.
-
My 1950's jc higgins model 50 in .270 with 130 gr corelokts , or my grampas model 14 remington pump action in .30 rem for the thicker stuff . For restricted unit (I live near one ) I just use my mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel .
Now the government knows I own three more guns lol ...... :chuckle:
-
270 in a Remington 700 BDL stainless.
-
I use a different setup every day I hunt. Imagine the stereotypical woman deciding which shoes to wear, that's me before a hunt. :chuckle:
Here's my line up deer cartridges. Extra points if anyone can name them all.

My wife will be using her tikka .308 topped with a vortex viper 4-16x44 (top) and I will be using my tikka 300 win mag topped with a viper HSLR 4-16x50 (bottom)

With all the homemade cartridges you post up, guessing even one might be a challenge.

-
Gonna give it a try with the 7mm mag
-
Gonna give it a try with the 7mm mag
rainy 45-70 , clear 7mag
-
For a rifle I use my Winchester featherweight model 70 in .280. For firearm restriction I use a cheap Maverick Arms model 88.
-
I used a win mod 88 243 for many of my younger years. Then on to a 257 wby, and 7mmRUM, last couple years have been primarily the Tikka t3 300WSM.
-
12 Guage in brush. Slugs or 000 buck. And any rifle bigger than a .22 in the open. In town it's Spears only though.
-
Ruger Boat paddle all weather in .270
-
Just don't use a .338WM. Ask me why.

If I hunt WWa again I'll either use my RBros 280AI or my ABolt SS 243
-
any 20 inch barrel in a synthetic stock and stainless action , 30 or 338 Cal and a low power scope , or the stand by moss burg 500 with 00 buck and sabots.
-
so i guess what this thread shows that any legal caliber will kill a blacktail...is one better than the other ? nope dead is dead....shot placement is paramount. what you have that shoots accurately is the key
-
British 303 with 165 gr. Hornsby sst handloads. Thats my deer gun. Elk Enfield 30-06 180 gr8. SST handloads
-
308 winchester 88 in the woods savage 10 308 mostly once in a while the 7mm mag savage stainless if it's gonna rain hard
-
Browning A bolt 7mm MAG with Leopold Vx-3 scope. Great knock down power
-
Oh and i forgot my other setup . I really like to use my ruger 10/22 with the red dot . I have a surefire mounted on it too , I get all the deer with that :chuckle: :chuckle: ..............Just kidding lol
-
So far 2 with a Thompson Center Icon .243, and one with the 1899 vintage Model 94 30-30. Next, the Ruger no. 3 in .35 Whelen or the 1947 Model 70 in 30-06.
-
Remington 700 in .308. but i miss my boat paddle Ruger stainless .260Rem that i sold to my buddy, that gun is great because of the low recoil you can shoot between branches and hit em in the earhole if necessary.it also killed bears, antelope, elk, coyotes, etc.no idea why i sold it *censored*!
-
practically anything you use on blacktail will put em down. any deer for that matter. as long as your shot placement is good your gonna be fine. that being said i used a 338 win mag on a blacktail a few years ago, makes a huge mess!
-
Remington Model 660 .308 w/ Winchester 150gn power Points or Rem 700 .308 w/Hornady 165gn SST has taken many Blacktails over the years.
-
Ruger scout rifle,308 Win 165 gr InterLock BTSP, Burris Scout scope. Short, easy to shoulder and sight, and easy to carry through the thick brush.

That's all my dad has used for the last 30+ years with open sights.I have never seen a deer take a single step after being shot.I shot a white tail buck with it a few years ago with the buffalo bore 225grn X-bullet and that deer simply folded like a lawn chair truly kills out of proportion to its case size.

I've hunted blacktails for 25 years now with two different .270's. I inherited a .243 a few years ago and take it out now and then too.
I've killed around 20 blacktails and I think 3 of them were over 100 yards. The rest have been between 10 and 60.
