Title: KITSAP COUNTY BEARS

Myself and a buddy are looking to hunt in the areas of Morgan Marsh and/or Green Mountain State Forest.
Does anyone have any tips on good spots here or anywhere near Seabeck/Dewatto areas?
We are both in the Navy and this is our first bear hunt! He wants to use a bow, but I will be using a 300 win mag w/ a Glock 20. Also, I did not see any info about magazine capacity in the regs? Any info is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Post by: pd on August 22, 2016, 01:18:30 PM: Your Glock 20 is a 10mm semi-auto, with a 4.3" barrel, correct (I just Googled it, no prior knowledge). If so, then you are OK to use it---the point is the handgun must have a barrel at least 4" in length.

I am in Kitsap, but have no knowledge of those two areas. Yes, there are black bears here (a lot), and yes, a hunter in the public areas can be successful. I have no specific advice for you, except to state the obvious. Strap on your boots, and get out there. Green Mountain in particular will have a lot of hikers and mountain bikers, so you will have to explore, and get away from the crowds. The blackberries are just now starting to molder, and will be gone in a few weeks. Get out now, right now.

In general, find areas of blackberries, away from crowds. If you find bear scat in the area, set up above the berry patch (on higher ground, I don't mean in a tree), and stay there. Bears can be hard to spot sometimes, so look for movement in the berry patch. Know your target! Do not just shoot into the patch!

Looking forward to getting out there now that I know the rules. Now to get the boots on the ground! Do you recommend any other areas in Kitsap (without stepping on your toes)?

Seems like every time I head out that way there are new clear cuts. Look for orange gates you can hunt that area and there are plenty of gates out there. Just don't park in front of the gate. No over night camping and no target shooting in those areas. Check out the pope and Talbot website just google pope and Talbot kitsap county. With the stretch of dry weather it is possible that they may close down there areas due to high fire danger. So check first.

No bears there..... :chuckle:.. in that area you can walk in any gate with a M or D.

Post by: fishwhackin on August 29, 2016, 11:51:40 PM: Green Mountain has several bear and they are where a lot of people are telling you they aren't. Best night, I seen 3 in one night no more than 150 yards from houses and I watched several people walk up/down the road/trail (some with their dogs). Point being, they are all over that mountain and going to be more condensed due to recent logging off of Tahuya lake road. As other people have mentioned, Bear Creek Dewatto holds several good places and I favor along the Dewatto river closer to the mouth of it above the bridge on Dewatto road. There is always plenty of sign in that area as well. Note: Do not risk leaving any of your equipment behind, even over night on Green Mt. I have lost a very nice tree stand and trail camera. That mountain gets a lot of traffic from hikers, brush pickers and other not so honest hunters. Good luck.
