Title: "tags" for bear/cougar
Post by: Odell on September 07, 2016, 08:48:54 AM
So I always thought WDFW sent a tag along with your license that would be attached to an animal just like deer or elk. But I didn't get one in the mail. Reading through the regs it looks like you just have your license, no tag?

Is that correct? Is that new? I swear last few years they sent me tags but I've never shot a bear or cougar so I've not paid much attention.

You should have tags for both, assuming you paid for the license with both as an option.

Your license and your tag are the same thing. The state doesn't call them tags anymore, it's a license, but there should be months and dates that can be cut out when you harvest your animal. You should have one for bear and one for cougar, if you paid for it.

Are you sure?
I have a "recreational license" and also "transport tag" for deer, elk, bear, and cougar.
You need to have the signed recreational license And a tag in your possession to hunt.

:yeah: Transport tag and license are not the same. The license should however note whether you paid for a tag but the tag is a seperate item.

You'll have 2 separate pieces of paper.  A hunting license and a transport tag. 1 transport tag for a bear and one for a cougar. One for a deer and one for an elk if that applies.

I'm just saying they all look the same now, they look like receipts, whether you want to call it a tag or a license. We get one receipt that shows everything we have paid for and then we get what we call tags. Maybe they do have the word "tag" still printed on them, I don't recall. But all the licenses/tags to me look like receipts and they all look the same. Other than the tags should have months and dates that can be cut out when you harvest your animal. Did I say I hate how they all look like receipts?   :chuckle:

Okay, so they call them tags. But, the difference now from how it used to be, is that there is no longer a "hunting license." We used to buy a hunting license and then whatever tags we wanted to go along with that license. Now we buy a deer license, an elk license, a bear license, and a cougar license. Then the state gives us the tags for free.

There is still a "tag" and "license" needed to hunt. Both are purchased as one item. P

Right, but there's no general hunting license like there used to be. You may not be old enough to know what I'm talking about.

The license is the long "receipt" that shows everything that you have bought and has a spot for you to sign at the bottom.  Each time you make a change or buy another tag or endorsement(fishing) you get a new license showing the change in activity.  You have to sign that and carry it with you as well as any tags for animals that you are hunting.

In summary not only do you have to have a bear tag that you notch you also have to have the long "receipt"/license showing that you bought the tag and the license has to be signed.

You can check online to see what you purchased. If you purchased a hunting package that include bear and cougar, you should have received a separate tag for each when your hunting/recreational license was mailed to you. If you paid for them and didn't receive them, contact WDFW Licensing. If you received them and lost them, you can buy replacements.

You would not necessarily receive a deer or elk tag at time of license purchase. For deer and elk you need to specific hunting method (modern, muzzleloader, archery) for each, and also Eastern or Western Washington for elk before they are sent.

You can't check online for licenses purchased because the system is shut down. You would need to go to a license dealer.

This answers the original question best.

Check your license and if it says bear and cougar you should have tags for them.  If you don't contact WDFW and they will help you out.  You have to have a tag to notch upon harvest.

Normally you'd be able to look online. The current shutdown is only temporary I believe.

If it wasn't shut down, this would be the link.

That's true. It would also show all purchases on the recreational license.

if you look on your license it will tell you not only what you bought but what was printed for you. for example if you go buy your deer & elk license / tags, then you get your deer tag but not your elk tag (because you don't know if your hunting MZ or modern for elk.) the license will tell you that you paid for deer and elk got a deer tag but no elk at this time.

Turns out the transport tags came back in March with my combo license and I had forgotten about it. When I looked it up in the regs the wording is a little confusing, makes it sound like all you need is the license that you sign
