We spent the weekend scouting the Prescott unit. we spent the weekend scouting the Prescott unit without any luck. Did the limited access wind farms and along the snake river breaks. Nothing but Grain fields With lots of deer. Everyone talks about the private property and needing permission but there's no reason to need permission on Properties, that host no animals. I may be eating my first 65 and over mf (mod firearm)😁 cow tag so any help from anyone would be appreciated. We will be back over in a few weeks to try again. We have no access to the tree farm so that is not an option. Thanks in advance anyone. Woodchuck has tried to help.

Don't feel bad eating a Prescott cow tag. 3 of us ate it several years ago. Tried to get on Boise Cascade Tree Farm and they only allow bull tags. We ended up hunting Simplot ground next to the Tree farm and had a 5pt. bull walk within 40yds.

I wouldn't say no need to ask just because your only seeing deer the elk might be hiding somewhere just not where your looking. Might ask and be surprised. :dunno:
never knew there were or supposed to be elk out there though until a few years ago. 7 hills or whatever it's called is out there, and it's feel free to hunt I think or register... But not sure on any elk but there might be some there.
GL though even if it does sound bleak.

tree farm doesn't really hold many cows anyway. 90% bulls in there. I'd be concentrating on getting access along the river. There are elk in there, even if it doesn't look "elk-y"

Where along the river? It's a big area?

700xrc. Is simply the cattle feeding area out of Pasco? How do u get permission? Call the feed plant??? Thanks in advance

700 Simplot?

Actually it is Grandview Farms Simplot. Talk with farm manager. Allen Weaver is his name. Go past feed lot and next to spud cellars is a shop- office.

that cow tag is in a way a waste cuz there are many more bulls than cows. in the tree farm I saw cows only once in 4 different years of scouting. scouted around lyons ferry and saw only bulls. very strange. mike w

have you tried the go hunt thing WDFW has too?
-
Is that the 15 day out permission deal? If not what is it?
-
Simplot folks said no hunting. Only employees and family. 😞

Im not trying to be negative, but maybe some research should have been done before applying for the tag. I had a 14 year old boy draw the big bull permit and he was allowed to hunt the tree farm 2 years ago. we saw bulls but quite a few cows also. he shot a 6 point. We got permission before we applied and knew our options. Good luck. I live in the Tri-Cities and have hunted the Prescott area for years for deer and have never really seen any elk outside of the tree farm. Im sure there are some but finding them, patterning them, and getting access could be hard and very time consuming. My son in laws family owns a big hay and corn farm right next to Juniper forest and they get an occasional elk in there corn fields but very inconsistently.

I'm over 65 and there weren't many choices to apply, so I thought next to the Dayton it would be possible to see some elk, especially if we hard some bad weather move in? I was unaware that it is mainly wheat fields.
Where is your in-laws farm and can I get permission to hunt if needed? Perhaps I can call them and see if they have seen elk recently. My tags doesn't activate until October 29 like everyone else's so??? Its a ways out yet. PM me and we can talk. Any help is appreciated. MOst on this forum have been very good about that, even bull hunters. I understand these elk like peas and barbonzo beans so I m looking for those kinds of farms too, figuring the elk memss up their crops?? Thanks, AL

It's not a waste at all. There are a few places that hold cows in the Prescott unit and the tree farm isn't one of them.
