Good luck to all of the guys who drew a quality rifle bull tag! I am heading up tomorrow after work for a week of calling bulls for my snot knose punk of a nephew who managed to draw one of the coveted Cowiche rifle Rut tags at only 14 years old :bash:

Well the hunt didn't turn out quite like we had hoped. Opening day we looked at 11 bulls but nothing that would break the 300 inch minimum we were looking for, Saturday the elk were somewhere else and the morning waso slow, that evening we located the bull we were after and put a play on him. My nephew took his shot but missed the bull. We spent the next morning making positive that it was in fact a miss. That evening we moved back to where we started and tried locating a bull, we got a reply from a good bull and started working on him, he was big and definitely in charge of that hill side it was very exciting to say the least. Bugle buster had him coming right in when the kids whispered to hisee dad " I see an elk " and his reply was " if it's the bull shoot him!" From 40 yards behind them we couldn't see any of the action but we did watch my nephew move his rifle 30 degrees to the right and immediately take a shot. There was some confusion because the bull we were calling to was still on the hill above us . We ran up to my nephew to give hugs and high fives and to lay eyes on his bull which he made a fantastic heart shot on at a mere 25 feet. It was a small satellite bull who had snuck in on the calling completely silent, I will not be posting any pictures of the bull or my nephew on this forum due to the few bad people on here who can't just be happy to for a kid who shot his first bull but would rather talk about a wasted quality tag

Congrats to him. Any elk if a trophy in my mind

I'm sorry you feel there are people that would ridicule your nephew for shooting his first bull. Congratulations to your family for a great hunt!

Glad to hear he got his first bull, I can tell you he will always remember the hunt. I shot my 1st bull at 10 years old, 46 years ago. I can tell you every detail of that hunt today. Any bull taken with family is a Quality Bull.

I've seen the bull. That kids face made it a trophy if you ask me.

Every bull is a quality bull  Way too much emphisis put on scores. If the kid is happy with it, thats all that should matter. If the kid isn't happy most likely it is other's expectations that put that in his head.
In 'o7 I burned a margret bull tag on a spike :) ate just as well as the three rag horns I passed on. Got stopped by the gamie on the way home. Officer Foster asked "What couldn't you have found anything bigger?" . Not his job to police quality, and the tag said any bull >:(

I respect that you don't want to post it, but it's too bad. I think you are robbing him more backs slaps than criticism. Anyone criticizing anyone for there legal animal isn't worth the air they are breathing anyway. Tell him congratulations. My first three Bulls were spikes. I'm not ashamed.

Tell him congrats, would like to see a pic up to him.

Ditto on the WE WANNA SEE PHOTOS! We need something to see so we can do some more backslapping, congratulations and celebrating! I know I'd be ecstatic just to have found and shot a bull, whether it's a spike or a monarch bull. He's a lucky young man to have somebody to show him how to call one in, how to pick the good spots. Elk meat is good stuff!

You shouldn't care about the opinion of any POS that would badmouth a kids first bull but I understand and respect your decision. Congrats to the hunter!!!!

Sorry guys I am standing my ground on the pics that is for my nephew if he chooses to do so
-
Good for you, don't blame you one bit....
-
Tell him good job, I've shot a lot of bulls/elk and I shoot the first legal elk I have a tag for in my pocket. Congrats kid. It seems that the first one is the toughest to get.

As for not wanting to show pics, I feel bad that it has come to this. I usually have more of a problem with people asking me what vehicle I drive or trying to pick apart the country in the pics to find out where I hunt. I now take close up pics and I am not in them. Other than that if someone wants to shame him for shooting any bull on an any bull tag, shame on them.

I don't think very many would criticize the kid at all.......as adults knowing how hard it is to get the tag there is a feeling of lost opportunity that the kid will realize once he gets older....It is not his fault at all.....most of the time in trophy situations even seasoned hunters have someone confirming the correct animal gets shot in the heat of the moment. Focus on the positive.

He shot a bull and that is awesome he got to do it with family.
-
Congrats to your nephew! Sounds like a trophy experience!
-
I saw the pic, he looks like a happy camper! Congrats to you guys!

 I killed a spike a few years ago with a Rimrock bull tag. The meat was far more important to me than the horns. Never regretted it for a second.
I agree that I don't feel many people would give him a hard time, but everytime I say that I read a thread where some jackwagon does exactly that, so I don't blame you. Congrats to the young hunter, close quarters elk killing will seal the deal for him. He's an elk hunter for life now!

:yeah:there it is !! My first deer was a doe, and I wouldnt let my dad skin it until all my neighbors got home and I toted her to their houses in my wagon :chuckle: no worries critics, it was about 8 degrees out :chuckle: but to me that doe was Boone & Crockett..
-
Congrats to your nephew on the bull, he has done something at 14 I still have not done at 36. :yike:
-
He did the right thing, and shot a close bull, there's no gaurantee he would have gotten a shot at a bigger bull. The way it is these days, clean shot a a legal elk, you better take it!! Good job to the kid!!

:yeah: it has recently happened to another youth and because of criticism a great bull will not be seen on here. Wish that wasn't the case but i respect the decision.
