I'm just curious do they charge you an access fee to walk in there or is it a courtesy? Sounds like the guy is leasing it so he can make money? Just trying to figure this out.

It's free to walk in no pass required.

Still sounds like a good place to be, go back there and wack one! I feel your pain though.

No different than a big cattle ranch operation, just this a tree farm. You can't expect, the farmer to put his operation on hold so you can hunt. Yes it's frustrating, but consider your self lucky that Popes isn't charging an access fee, or worse yet close their land entirely.

So, in other words these guys who leased access to pick brush actually have more right to be in than you do who is accessing the property for free. Theyre doing their "job" no matter how you look at it. These guys make their living picking brush.

many times I've walked miles into a hunting spot only to have a hunter with keyed access drive right up to me. I can't be upset over it. I could have ponied up the $$$ and bought the key. Lessons learned.

How can you make a living picking brush? What do they do with it?

I'd keep hunting it, maybe get dropped off so the guy thinks your not there, maybe you'll catch him poaching?   But now that people know where your at and there might be a good buck in there, you might have more competition.  Good luck.

I had a couple vans drive past me just last night. That's part of hunting private timberlands. Learn to work around them, that deer isn't gone he will still be there.

I used to get frustrated by brush pickers driving into a walk in I like. I kept hunting it and I'm not sure them being in there doesn't help sometimes. If they are working an area I planned to hunt I regroup and go to where the deer exit when disturbed. Bummer on the timing though. Stay after that buck, he's still there  :twocents:

The best trick is to get off the road and then you don't see vehicles.

While i can understand the frustration, I deal with this every day of every hunting season, I have had people rip into me for being behind a locked gate, IT'S MY JOB!!!! I for the life of me can't figure out why a guy would want to make enemys with a guy who has a key to the gate? We have packed guys up to where they want dropped off and told them you get something, get it to the road and either a crew memeber or log truck will get it to the gate, which we have done several times. totally understand the frustration and if he is just out screwin around then thats a bad deal.

The way I see it, if they leased the land and have work to do then what's there to really complain about? They have just as much right to be there if not more than someone who isn't leasing it.
IMHO this wouldn't be any different than a area where active logging and hauling is going on but your allowed to walk into the surrounding areas and happened to get driven passed by loggers in their trucks and log trucks hauling out trees all day long. And everyone's had an account of this sort of thing happening where you see a deer or elk etc and a worker drives by or stops to ask what your up to and it spooks.

Depends wha they're picking. A lot of it is for flower arrangements.

That sucks when you're not expecting it. It sounds like those guys had every right to be in there, as you did. It's a lot like public land. There are all kinds of people who are using it and they all have the right to do so. I hope you find that buck and knock him down!

We deal with this as well in Kitsap GMU.  Part of the game.  No used complaining just use it to your advantage.

Let me clear this up. Since I'm the gentleman you spoke to. I lease that land for 80k$ a year for my business and have every right to be up there during hunting season. And as the good man I wanted to be sine I know how it is when you're hunting I told you there where gonna be workers in here shortly for a heads up since you where close to you're vehicle. Then after you implied you wanted to stay cuz you didn't care since you where going to Idaho tomorrow I told you about 2 different bucks I saw while working back there yesterday and told my workers to stay away from that area. I was more than fair. And quote on quote. I said I can't hunt while working back there because that's Pope's rules. And yes bough cutters have to wear orange due to new rules in the contract but that wasn't a problem when they all have t in there vehicle to put on when they start work . I was more than fair to you with what limitations I had. I've never been caught poaching and I never will because I don't poach. And our family's been leasing that land for 20 years bud. Hope you do better in Idaho

And when I went and turned around it was to let more workers in the gate because they where late. And that deer you missed out on was nothing but a illegal doe that was still standing there at the end of the cut. You know what they say about yhe internet tho. You can't believe everything you read

I'd like to apologize to Shane771. I swear I heard you say I can't hunt because of poaching, your truck did make it hard to hear.  I know you have every right to be there and I wasn't all that mad at you and your workers, thats why I called pope to ask why of all the days of the year they choose this week to open the gates, that's all. Sorry again. Best of luck to you and your business.

Good apology Kball.  Simple misunderstanding with a few hurt feelings thrown in.
Thanks to Shane for being a good guy and trying to help Kball locate bucks while taking care of his workers safety.
