Title: Good clearcut?
Post by: Ghunt on October 24, 2016, 03:05:13 PM
I've been sitting on this cut for two day now and i've only seen one day and a couple of fawns. I was wondering if this is a good cut to stay on especially with the rut coming up. What are your guy's opinion? The google earth pic is from 2014 so the cut is about 2 to 3 years old.

That is not enough info for you to get any good advice.  What's around it? How old is it? How big is it? That being said...if one doe is using it she will have to be bred at some point. Does come into cycle at different times during the rut so the more does you have in the cut the more chances you have of one being in cycle which means the bucks will be around.

And the old adage in Blacktail hunting is for every deer you see there's at least five you don't.

It's Supposed to have pictures but it won't upload with them. I sent them to an admin and he is going to add them.

Think you might have better luck on an older cut?  Seems a little barren still.  I like cuts that weren't sprayed if you can find that!

How do you tell the difference between a sprayed and not sprayed cut?

DNR and all major timber companies spray now.  Private woodlots and small timber - not so much so.  They generally spray somewhere about a year after the cut, then plant in the winter or early spring following the spray.  It takes 3 - 4 years from the spraying before good deer food is going again, and the planted trees are getting big enough to provide cover for the deer.

I agree with the earlier post.  It appears there is not enough cover nor food to attract a lot of animals yet.  Most of the tracks you find are made at night.

Use Google Earth's history feature "clock" tab to look back to 2008 or so.  Find a brand new cut made between 2008 and 2010 or so and you've got a spot that probably has the essentials for good deer habitat today.  Concentrate on finding one that has parallel ridges, a swale or draw, or a high spot that you can sit and glass across or down into to give you better vision into the deer's world.  G

Go get 'em!

Edit - added pic of a seven year old cut.  By year 8 in SW WA, the trees are getting so large it is hard to see under or into them.

When I was walking to my spot to sit I had seen a lot of deer tracks not so much to tell if they were buck or not.

Sit on it looks like a good spot.  When the bucks are rutting they wonder anywhere.  I would prefer an older cut for sitting and glassing but the older cuts u need to have a high point and be looking down on the cut

Yeah I would too. Just in the area i'm in there isn't to much high points on the edges of cuts.

Doe in heat urine.  $6 - $12/bottle.  Sometimes it's magic - bucks come running, or at least investigating.  Most times, in my experience, it's just piss, and nothing happens.
