Going to buy a new 22 Handgun on the 15th. Looking at it being solely for hunting rabbits and grouse. Not wanting to go over 600 dollars. What are you guys using for field use? Thanks for any positive info you have on this :tup:
Are you wanting a revolver or a semi auto?
For a semi auto 22lr pistol the Ruger SR22 and Smith & Wesson M&P compact are both top performers in their class and they'll both be pretty easy to carry. If you have big hands you'll probably like the M&P better but if your hands are medium sized or smaller, you could like the SR22 better.
I don't think you can never go wrong with a Ruger Mk III either. I have a MK III stainless target and a Ruger 22/45, my Mk III SS target is much more accurate than my 22/45 but I shoot the 22/45 A LOT more because it has a threaded barrel. I put a VQ trigger kit in both of them and that kit makes for a much nicer trigger in them.
In a revolver, Rugers single six convertible, with the magnum and Long Rifle cylinders, is always a good choice.
I've got a Kel Tec PMR 30 22mag that is a whole lot of fun to shoot. Ammo definitely costs more and with those 30 round magazines you really have to pace yourself of you can burn through a butt load of ammo real fast, but it's VERY light and does hold 30 rounds per magazine so I'd consider it a very good choice for a packing 22.
Biggest problem with the 17 HMR or 22mag pistols is they're VERY VERY L O U D!!!!!

LOL I hear that a lot and the first time you do it, you think why in the h311 did they design a gun like this, but after you do it a couple times it's easy peasy.

I got rid of mine for the exact same reason. What a hunk of junk....surely they could have made it easier to take apart and put back together. :tup:

He was saying the guy at the gun shop told him he wouldn't believe the number of people that bring their gun in in pieces and ask them to put it back together for them. :chuckle:

I've owned two Ruger Mk III SS Target models. My first one I bought new back in the mid 90's and started shooting it right out of the box. Easily had well over 5000 rounds through it and never had it apart a single time and it never missed a beat. Lost custody of it in a divorce and bought another just like it.
To me, the heft of the Mk III feels much better in my hands and I like how the wrap around Hogue grip feels better than my 22/45 Lite, but the Lite has the threaded barrel and I can shoot it suppressed so I hardly ever shoot the Mk III.

I have many .22 pistols. The most accurate one I have shot is a $150 Heritage Rough Rider. 6 shot single action. Action in not as slick as the Rugers, the bluing is cheap but the thing drives tacks.
I love my Heritage.22 with 4.25" barrel
Great guns for kids also. The single action makes them think before shooting each round.

Single six. Most versatile.22 on the market. Plenty accurate, I use the lr cylinder for small game a plinking, I use the magnum with shot shells for snakes. Honestly if I could only have one handgun I don't know that I could not pick it.this would
Be my vote as well. I've had mine for 35 years now. Have killed
Many rabbits and rattlesnakes with it. But only one
Grouse. I've only pulled the trigger on that one.

Pretty sure ruger recently discontinued all the mark lll's so not many choices if you wanted to go supressed in the ruger lineup

One of the Rugers has Volquartsen guts and I still MUCH prefer the Buckmark.
Better feel, grip angle, balance and controls.
I shoot 1911s and the Buckmark is much more natural for me.
I will sell you a nice, like-new Ruger MKII 6" with VQ upgrades, original box if you're interested.
