Title: What to do with steelhead eggs ?
Post by: gaddy on October 29, 2016, 09:05:08 AM
To cure or not? Or just throw on a hook and fish? I caught a female with eggs and am wondering how to convert them to bait. Its my first with eggs and have not used them for bait. Anyone with advise ?

Basic cure for eggs is
Split the skein open length wise
Rub in handful of borax, brown sugar sprinkle sea salt( no iodine)
Rub in till starting to mix in with the eggs then roll up in wax paper, bag in a good ziplock, then put in bottom of refrigerator.  Double bag if putting the house refg, wife might go ballistic!
Wait appx 10 days the cut to size you want to use.
Go back to river and use
Good luck.

Dump borax into a Ziploc. Cut eggs into bait sized clusters. Toss eggs into bag with borax. Roll them around until covered.
Add a bit of raspberry jello to the borax if you want to sweeten them up.

It depends on what you want to use them for. What is do you want to catch and where?

eggs are eggs.  i cure them all as long as they're not loose(not usually a problem, as i don't keep boots).

i've never understood why people toss out springer and summer run eggs though.  best summer run bait ever.
