Hey Guys,
Just wanted to check in. I know that the General season is ending for the east side on Sunday. Just curious if guys have been seeing a lot of cows down low or if we should concentrate a little higher. For late archery we usually give the Umptanum a go but weather has a lot to do with that.
trying to get my son his first elk. We are going up for the last 4 days of his tag next weekend.
Any observations are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I would imagine, anywhere will do.

That is kind of what I am hoping. I want to limit his shot to 150 to no more than 200 yards.
Lets hope the cows cooperate. :chuckle:

Also be curious if anyone was in Snow up on the flats (Umptanum) or how high you can still get in the Naches? Ravens Roost etc? This Hunt for my son is during the time we are not normally up there.
Thanks
Brian

I was up there on Tuesday and wasn't much snow in umptanum. I was hear Bald Mtn.
It was near 50 in Bumping today. I'm sure it was warm up their too.
I can't speak to Ravens Roost.

Thanks Dan. Anyone else?

I think I'd stay low. Seen quit a few elk during the season. A friend just filled his today.

I talked with a friend and son who had a cow tag n Umtamum. They were on the eastern end and said they were seeing cows every day. Closest shot was 1,000 yards, but not enough power in the scope and gun to pull it off. He said they saw over 100 cows in the four days they were there. You should be able to fill the tag.

Thanks for the Update Dan! I am not sure 1000 yard shots are on the docket for my son either. I may just have to try to get lucky on the Western edge of the Umptanum or higher. I am not hearing much about snow so they should be in some of the usual places still up towards the Little Naches as well I am thinking.

Sounds like it has been a slow go for the cow tag holders in the General season..... :dunno: Hopefully they will come out of hiding this weekend.

I ate my little naches cow tag...yum yum. Down low I would go.

I saw lots of elk within 3 miles of 4 corners today. This cow and calf were less than a mile away from 4 corners 25yds off the uphill side of the road.

Well, The Elk Gods and My Dad who is no longer with us were smiling down on us this past weekend. I was worries about Zac taking a shot farther than 100-200 yards. Not that he couldn't do it, I just wanted the experience to go very well. And well it did. We went to the Umptanum and didn't see much but I knew they were there. On Friday afternoon we came around a hillside and there stood 2 big cows. They gave us time to setup the shooting sticks and get a good rest. I thought for sure they would run. I mean at 54 Yards they run from me all of the time. LOL. But something kept them there and Zac dropped the hammer on her and she went down. He was a little emotional at first as I think most of us get some time during a kill, but he was very excited. Thanks to all who gave comments and support. Memories to last a lifetime.
