Title: Ungrateful people
Post by: rosscrazyelk on November 08, 2016, 05:48:51 AM
Thursday of last week I spotted a nice bull, took video ,photos and such. After I come out of my hole I run into a guy who is helping his father in law try to find a bull. The tag holder was a 60 plus gentlemen who drew with Max points and has a bad leg. Knowing his chances ofdrawing again are slim and his condition I share the location of this bull. All I asked in return was if they could bring it by our camp so my friends son could see a bull up close..
4 days went by and they never showed..
Last time I help somebody like that... on a good note however when I went by their camp the bull they were displaying was not the same bull I showed them. Lol..
They shot a much smaller bull.

So the older man ended up shooting a bull anyhow huh. Well it was nice of you to help them out even though they didn't appreciate it

It was nice of you to try and help them even though they got another bull. It probably didn't occur to them they were being ungrateful because you'd asked them to come by the camp and show the bull you put them on. I wouldn't get to wound up. There's bigger problems in the woods, Ross.

Oh I know.. my hunting partners saw the bull displayed first and said "I thought you showed them a big bull?"
I was like it is.. I showed you guys the video.
I never saw that smaller bull .. oh well

So they're ungrateful because they didn't come by and show you a bull that you didn't put them on?  :dunno:

Personally I think you set yourself up for disappointment when you do something nice for someone else and expect something in return even something such as what you asked.

I do nice stuff all the time for people and try to leave it at just that, I did something nice and moved on.  Now that being said if someone does something nice for me I try to go out of my way to return the favor and 9 out of 10 times they never expect it and are surprised when I do.

I understand your frustration though.

Your feelings are understandable regardless of the bull they shot.
How about the PMs from guys that be all like "help me please"
And I'm all like...."ok but you'd better report back because I'm about at my wits end with people not reporting back"
They be like "Oh no...I will toooootalllly report back"
So you tell em stuff...

I always try to give guys the benefit of the doubt.  It is possible they shot it at dusk the night before and worked to get it back to camp and didn't get a chance to come by.  Probably not, but you never know.

I think you still did the right thing, you possibly helped get the guy on an elk that he was happy enough with to pull the trigger.

If there were multiple guys/tags in the same camp it might not have been the two guys the OP talked to that shot the small bull on "display".

It's all fine and good.. I know he shot one because I heard the shot and saw and talked with one of the boys at the road. He was bringing all their guns and packs to the truck and was taking down their pack frames I just assumed it was the same bull. I even gave the kid a beer to give to the old man to have a drink and celebrate.

I need to figure out how to camp next to you next year.

It seems like with such a simple request "bring the bull by camp so the youngin could see a bull up close" that a guy would want to make good on that regardless of the details of the harvest. At the very least swing by the camp and invite the young man to come by and look at the elk hangin.

I cant see turning down a kid that wanted to look at my elk, and I cant see not inviting a kid to come look if I knew of one that wanted to take a look.

My kids always want to see everything my friends and family bring home and they're always wide eyed and inquisitive when looking.

A little story about camp ettiquitte:
We didn't have elk tags this year in Idaho, I saw some elk, I flagged down a group of guys at a big camp and asked if they had elk tags, they did, I told em about the elk.
A day later the wardens came by our camp...apparently the other camp said "Those guys from Washington are some stand up guys, really good people"...all because I BS'd with em for about 5 minutes.
It never hurts to be friendly. Keep at it Ross...be the change you wish to see in the world. Ok, maybe that was a little over the top :)
