Title: Clearwater unit elk
Post by: blacktaill on November 13, 2016, 05:14:01 PM
Anyone have or see anyone that had success elk hunting this year in the Clearwater unit? We hunted for 8 days and did not see one elk. Drove over 500 miles on the logging roads to try to find them, walked over 50 miles in areas we found good sign. Any idea what is going on in that area?

I saw one pic from rifle season.  A few from bow and muzzle loader all in the Clearwater. Here's a pic of my buddy and I with his bull from muzzle loader.

This was the worst year I have ever seen out west...seen small 3-5 groups during muzzy season but it was tough hunting!

I have actually heard that from a few different people that live in the area. Very sad.

You obliviously don't know Scott, besides he could be joking, but knowing a little about that area he's probably not.

So they do exist!  Congrats!  Was he just hunting with a muzzy for fun during the rifle season?

Yeah you're right, I  do not know him.  The racist comment had more to do with the derogatory term than the elk management.

The population is down and the area is huge and rugged.

My apologies.. I'm not racist trust me on that... There are elk in the clearwater but the natives definitely get there share and then some. With all the lease land now the clearwater gets alot more pressure than in the past and that pushes the elk into nasty spots. Hunters that don't know the unit roll in and camp where elk normally could be found and that don't help either. I walked up a brushy skid road up to a ridge to check a good rut spot this fall only to find a rig and camp up there  :bash:....Thats my two cents

We quit hunting the Clearwater 20 years ago because of tribal poaching.  We had a really nice 6X6 shot with a rifle and stolen by tribal members 9 miles behind locked gates that had 2 of our arrows in it.  Once they got keys to all the gates it went down hill fast!

Scotty is a racist and especially hates black kids! :chuckle: :bash: How about everyone put their politically correct pants back in the drawer. As for the Clearwater, Scott has that right to.

A lot of bulls came out of there last year, relative to the usual numbers for there that is.  I'm sure that didn't help with the hunting this year.

I know the 30 mph winds and multiple inches of rain didn't help our group.  But that's just part of the puzzle out there.  Washouts, downed trees, flooding, being completely soaked miserable.

One bright spot in my season so far is that I've never seen so many chantrelle mushrooms in my life.

Spent 3 days hunting in there this year and saw one cow running up the road above the Solleks, did not see or hear of any in others camps either. Places I found good sign last year were barren. The elk were in the pastures only one day I was there this year which was strange.

Copalis seemed pretty barren this year too.

No the pic was from opening day of muzzle loader.  Clearwater has been open for muzzle loader last year and this year.

My thought is the new early muzzle loader season is a big factor.  Last year was the first for muzz.  The rifle season was pretty bad.  Just not what it had been the years before.  The other big change is the amount of new clear cuts, definitely a boost for road hunters.

I'm headed up there for late archery turkey day till Monday I believe. We went there last year with no luck. We saw a bunch of cows but no bulls.
Where are the new clear cuts at? Any good ideas on where to head and look at?
We got a pair of elk and deer tags.

We saw what we believed to be Indians ( had decals of a headress on there truck) and then Heard a few gun shots last year. It was kind of odd. They passed us a few times in there white truck. Then a half our later we heard shots right at dark. when we were headed back to our campsite we saw there truck running. With the doors open and no one around. Must have seen something good.
Just sucks we're out there bow  hunting and they get to shoot anytime they want.

The newer cuts were only a few miles in on the mainline.  Some newish cuts on the C 3000/3100 and the Q 3000, I forget the number, but about two miles from the prison there are some big ones (by today's standard).

We usually have a spot to camp off the c-3000 line and head further up the c-3100. I looked up the q line and we might head out that way and see. We have 4 1/2 days to do something. Hoping the weather isn't too bad. Last year the weather was awesome with no rain. It was cold but clear.

Down low on the Q-3300.  Some real jungle and wear tall waterproof boots.  Some old overgrown roads along there that take you within a maybe 100 yds of the park.

Never elk hunted it but fished it every year since I was old enough to cast a rod. Seems like we used to see elk every single time we went up, until about 10 years ago. Sightings started getting less and less common, been a couple years now since I've seen the elk up there.
